OVERVIEW

As a Veterinary Radiographer, you will take an active and unsupervised role in the busy Imaging Dept., working primarily with MRI, CT and X-Ray, and ensuring diagnostic images of the highest quality are obtained.

The Diagnostic Imaging Dept. consists of 5 board-certified radiologists, 4 residents, 2 interns and 7 radiographers/assistants. On-site imaging facilities include radiography (DR), fluoroscopy, 2 ultrasound suites, 1.5T MRI, and 64-slice CT.

The role involves working a 40-hour week Monday-Friday with shifts between 8.30am-6.30pm, part-time and compressed hours could be considered. Participation in the out of hours on-call rota is also required, covering a share of weeknight, weekends and Bank holidays throughout the year to ensure service provision at all times.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform a range of Diagnostic Imaging studies, specialising in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) and Radiography, on patients to produce high-quality, diagnostic images, in accordance with the demands of services within the Hospital.

  • In collaboration with the Radiologists, Clinicians and Anaesthetists, assess patients and their clinical requirements to exercise the most effective and applicable imaging techniques, in accordance with current protocols.

  • Provide support and reassurance to animals under examination, in view of their physical and psychological needs.

  • Take responsibility for the health and safety of yourself and others whilst participating in imaging studies, in accordance with Local Rules, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), current Ionising-Radiation Regulations and magnetic field guidance.

  • Ensure patients and colleagues receive ionising-radiation doses as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).

  • Assist with the organisation and workflow in your area by problem solving and liaising with other services and the Workflow Team.

  • Ensure that Diagnostic Imaging facilities and equipment are fully functional and in proper working condition by carrying out regular maintenance and cleaning, following correct operating procedures, and alerting the Lead Radiographer, Head of Service or Facilities Manager, where appropriate, to any hazards, safety issues, malfunction, or error.

  • Supervise and monitor visitors and colleagues within Radiography, MRI and CT facilities and associated work areas, ensuring that Local Rules and Health and Safety guidelines are followed.

  • Assist in the teaching of students and colleagues, and provide inductions to Imaging services (covering magnetic resonance and radiation protection), as required by the Hospital and the Head of Service.

  • Perform administrative tasks, such as organising work schedules, maintaining patient records, and carrying out ad hoc duties in-line with your role and responsibilities, as requested by the Head of Service or Lead Radiographer.

  • Manage stock levels for imaging contrast media and associated apparatus.

  • Maintain tidiness and cleanliness within your work area.

  • When possible assist with tasks outside of the imaging department to support the wider hospital within the remit of your qualification/experience.

  • Undertake CPD to comply with your relevant governing body and/or requirements to your role and keep up to date with any changes to Local Rules, Health and Safety guidelines and Ionising-Radiation Regulations.

KEY PEOPLE REQUIREMENTS

You will be diligent, organised, and professional, with the ability to maintain a harmonious working relationship with others and promote collaboration amongst teams.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified RVN or Diagnostic Radiographer holding either a BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography, or other relevant degree/qualification. Prior experience in veterinary radiography is desirable, but not essential. Experience in CT and MRI would also be desirable, but not essential. Non-qualified candidates would be considered if they have extensive, relevant experience.

Full support and training will be provided for the equipment and for the handling and positioning of veterinary patients.
