Abiomed, part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, is the maker of Impella, a percutaneous Ventricular Assist Device (pVAD) that helps in recovering hearts and saving lives.
Impella is currently indicated for the treatment of drug-resistant acute heart failure, but we are aiming to expand the indication to patients with severe coronary artery disease who are at high risk for surgical intervention (high-risk revascularization), which is already indicated in the United States and Europe, as well as to reduce myocardial damage caused by acute myocardial infarction and reduce the risk of future heart failure. We are also aiming to obtain an indication for the use of Impella to reduce the risk of future heart failure by reducing myocardial damage caused by acute myocardial infarction. (A large-scale, multi-center, prospective, randomized, controlled trial is ongoing in the U.S. and Europe). In addition, we plan to introduce products with a smaller diameter and less invasive pump catheter (Impella ECP), a longer-lasting pump catheter (Impella BTR), and a pump catheter for right heart assist (Impella RP Flex).
