Job Summary:
Provides pre-and post- testing support for genetic testing. Collect appropriate clinical and family information from clients necessary for scheduling of appropriate tests, proper interpretation of test results and preparation of final reports.
Essential Responsibilities:
Counsels patients regarding prenatal genetic testing including amniocentesis, Chorionic villus sampling, first and second trimester screening.
Compiles and evaluates family history and genetic test results.
Conducts patient education regarding complex genetic disorders (with a focus on familial cancer, cardiogentetics, neurogenetics, muscular dystrophies, inherited skin disorders, and inherited connective tissue disorders.
Recommends standard genetic tests; identity additional family members to be tested.
Educate patients regarding their risks/options and test results.
Provide grief and crisis counseling to individuals and/or families as needed.
Provides follow-up patient care and coordinates other resources based upon evaluation of individual patient needs and family goals.

Education
Masters degree in human genetics or genetic counseling from an American Board of Genetics Counseling (ABGC) accredited training program (degree required prior to employment start date).
License, Certification, Registration
Genetic Counselor Certificate within 36 months of hire from American Board of Genetic Counseling OR Genetic Counselor Certificate within 36 months of hire from American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics
National Provider Identifier required at hire

Preferred Qualifications:
Three (3) years of experience as a genetic counselor.
