Indian Health Service Supervisory Physician (Internal Medicine)-DHA in Shiprock, New Mexico

Summary This position is located within the Division of Clinical Services, Internal Medicine Branch, Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC), Shiprock Service Unit, Shiprock, New Mexico. The purpose of this position is to serve as a technical expert within the specialty area of Internal Medicine. The incumbent assumes responsibility for the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients. The incumbent reports to the Chair of Internal Medicine. Responsibilities Assists the Chair of Internal Medicine and/or in the absence to manage and direct the Department of Internal Medicine including strategic planning, policy formulation, budget management, human resource management, performance improvement, quality management. Primary assignments in providing comprehensive and continuing health and medical care services for patients. Utilize professional medical staff peer review and extensive clinical experience, training and expertise in evidence-based practice principles in order to provide direction and guidance to department medical staff. Responds to acute emergency interventions, working closely in consultation with members of other medical departments. Supervises Internal Medicine physician and provider staff. information management, equipment and supplies management, and planning and management of specialty clinics. Completes other administrative duties as assigned by the Chair of Internal Medicine. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association(external link); Association of American Medical Colleges(external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education(external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Note: An agency may waive the licensure requirement for research positions not involving direct patient care. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association(external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. Applicants who meet the above Basic Requirements qualify for GS-11 (or equivalent) positions. Additional Requirements for Grades GS-12 and Above For GS-15 -- 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of specialized experience in providing direct supervision, plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, clinical oversights to medical staff, evaluating staff for professional practice and clinical/technical functions, directs activities of the Internal Medicine medical staff. Maintain administrative matters and responsible for direct patient care. Additional Information Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
