The Controller is a hands-on position and will report directly to the CFO. The ideal candidate will have the background and experience to lead all aspects of financial accounting and the interest and drive to help our CFO continue to develop and implement the key processes and internal controls required for our growth-oriented company.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the accounting department and work directly with a team including an accounting manager, accounts payable manager, and staff.

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and improve the accuracy and consistency of reported financial results.

  • Manage the monthly financial close, including integrity and completeness of general ledger account reconciliations, and work with the team to implement process changes to shorten the monthly closing process.

  • Coordinate all activities with the Company’s outside accounting firm and manage the annual financial audit, benefit plan audits, and other regulatory examinations.

  • Work with the CFO and Director of Financial Planning & Analysis to perform analysis to identify trends, variances and opportunities for improvement to help guide the business in support of our corporate strategy.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.

  • Conduct routine audits to assess the effectiveness of internal controls.

  • Corporate tax planning in coordination with the Company’s outside accounting firm and ensure compliance with relevant tax regulations and filings.

  • Multi-state tax compliance and reporting, ensuring adherence to state and federal tax regulations.

  • Manage Accounts Payable department and related functions, including Expense reviews and interacting with internal departments and external vendors. Work with the CFO to drive process automation in this high-volume function.

  • Perform day-to-day Cash Management, Cash Forecasting, and Treasury functions.

  • Develop internal audit function and programs for transactional, operational, compliance and financial audits.

  • Design and perform tests to evaluate effectiveness of internal controls and transaction flows in ERP system.

  • Prepare and present analysis and reports to management documenting findings and recommendations for corrections and improvements.

    The successful candidate must effectively communicate information and ideas to ensure clarity. This role primarily involves stationary work, operating a computer for extended periods. Additionally, physical tasks may include transporting office supplies and equipment, as well as bending and stooping to file documents. Occasionally, the position may involve driving a vehicle to/from customers, as well as loading/unloading boxes and packages of various sizes and weights. Specific vision abilities necessary for this role include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications

Requirements:

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, with demonstrated experience collaborating with key executives across various departments within a company, and excellent communication skills. Additional qualifications include:

B.S. degree in accounting, and a CPA license in good standing, with a minimum of 3 years working for a public accounting firm, and experience managing financial audits..

  • 5+ years of recent experience as a Controller, or Assistant Controller, in Distribution, Logistics and/or Manufacturing with perishable inventory in fast pace and high transaction volume environment.

  • Strong technical knowledge of GAAP and related Accounting and basic Finance principles.

  • Experience with private-equity owned companies, a plus.

  • Ability to work and think independently and take charge of job assignments.

  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of management and associates.

  • Advanced Excel skills, proficiency in other Microsoft Office products, experience with Business Intelligence tools.

  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication, report preparation and presentation skills.

  • Minimal travel to company satellite locations.
