The Department of Pediatrics has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Systems Engineer. This position will contribute to the growth and success of the Pediatric department by overseeing a portfolio of Linux-based platforms and applications, while also contributing to the management of our Windows server platforms. This role is critical in safeguarding the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive data, necessitating strict adherence to UW, UW Medicine, WA State, and federal regulations and policies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Server and Network Infrastructure

• Manage department equipment located in UW data centers throughout hardware lifecycles including installation, configuration, moves, maintenance, and decommissioning of servers, switches, firewalls and networking. • Manage multiple large research storage and file systems at the petabyte scale and associated protocols (XFS, ZFS, NFS, CIFS/Samba) including creating and troubleshooting scripts using Bash, Python, PowerShell, etc. • Support legacy department HPC Clusters and migrate data and workloads to central UW Hyak HPC platform and assist researchers with large data transfers between collaborating departments and external institutions. • Collaboratively manage on-premises backups and restores using Backup Exec and tape library systems including tape management. • Manage department networks: IP addresses, subnets, firewalls and DNS entries. • Manage web and application platforms and authentication technologies (Apache, Nginx, IIS, SAML, OAuth, SSL certificates).

Database Management and Application Support

• Administer databases supporting administrative and research solutions (MySQL, MSSQL, etc.). • Administer administrative and research applications. • Develop and support business tools using Microsoft 365 including SharePoint, Power Platform, or other development platforms.

Security, Privacy and Compliance

• Maintain a secure server infrastructure environment and remediate security vulnerabilities raised on weekly scans. • Coordinate security efforts and incident response with UW Office of Information Security and UW Medicine Security. • Align system security with HIPAA, FERPA and other regulatory standards in alignment with University of Washington and UW Medicine security standards and policies.

Client Support

• Install, secure and support specialized lab-based research computing instrumentation and application software. • Backup to the Client Systems Administrator and provide escalated end-user device support.

Documentation

• Create and update existing documentation processes including but not limited to: knowledgebase articles for end users, internal systems and support documentation, disaster recovery, business continuity, and security plan documentation. • Collaborate on the creation of policies, standards, and procedure documentation.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and 2 years of relevant experience OR equivalent education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Administration of Linux server platforms in an enterprise network environment. • Administration of large-scale storage and backup platforms. • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills with an established history of customer service. • Expertise in Windows Server Hyper-V, cloud platforms (Azure, AWS), HPC computing platforms, containers (Apptainer, Docker) and scripting languages including Bash, Python and PowerShell. • Expertise in systems and network security implementation in regulated environment (HIPAA, FERPA).

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Hybrid working environment with a minimum of 2 on-site days per week after the initial training period. • Ability to move up to 50 lbs. • Ability to work in an enterprise data center environment (noise and temperature) when necessary. • WA state driver’s license for UCar rental eligibility. • Occasional after-hours response for system outages or maintenance. • Occasional travel to UW Pediatrics and affiliated institution locations including but not limited to Seattle Children’s campus, Sand Point, South Lake Union, etc
