Description
As a Software Development Manager (SDM), you will help build and manage services that drive and automate the mitigation of incident response across all Amazon Web Services (AWS). You will manage software development engineers, security engineers and program managers to develop innovative security solutions at an unprecedented scale. Our services protect the AWS cloud for all customers and preserves our customer’s trust in us. You will get to use the full power and breadth of AWS technologies to build services that empower our incident response team, protecting every single AWS customer from security threats.
We are seeking an innovative and thoughtful leader with an established background in delivering scalable solutions. You have strong technical skills, excellent project management skills, great communication skills, and motivation to achieve results for your customers. You are a leader who prioritizes systematically, communicates clearly and compellingly, and fosters a growth mentality and delivery excellence within your team.
As a security leader, you will (a) lead by example, innovate and solve security challenges at a massive scale, (b) orchestrate strategy and direction, roadmap planning, and project execution scheduling, (c) hire, build and manage a cross-functional engineering team, and (d) foster strong team culture.
We understand that life is dynamic and we have a flexible work environment that enables individuals to adjust their work schedule to accommodate personal needs. Our team is distributed, though most of the team is located in Virginia. We generally keep core business hours of 9:30 EST - 4:30EST, while allowing flexibility as needed. At AWS Security, it’s not about clocking hours, it’s about delivering results.
On-Call Responsibility
This position involves on-call escalation responsibilities. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.

Basic Qualifications
3+ years of engineering team management experience
7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
