The Research Scientist/Engineer provides direct oversight and coordination of complex research protocols for multiple federally funded research projects coordinated across multiple clinical sites as well as administrative and operations for the multidisciplinary research group (Clinical Learning, Evidence, And Research Center). This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator and Department Administrator. Research priorities include work in low back pain and lumbar imaging, but extends to all musculoskeletal conditions. The Research Scientist/Engineer will oversee several research studies including designing studies, developing methodology, supervision of research staff, managing data, interacting with biostatisticians, bioinformatics, and other health services researchers for manuscript writing.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.)
Responsible for the development and implementation of clinical research protocols. Significant contributor in all aspects of research development: study design, grant writing, protocol development and implementation across multiple sites, and manuscript development for the dissemination of research findings. Responsible for understanding and implementing research regulatory compliance guidelines including human subjects protections, data privacy and security, and fiscal guidelines to operate research projects day-to-day; management of multiple research grants including budgeting, research related expenditures, subcontracts with various other academic medical centers, etc.

Design Phases of Research Projects (20%) includes scientific questions to be answered, data to be collected, regulatory compliance as it relates to the overall project, and operational oversight for implementation solely responsible for all human subjects related documentation/approvals across all projects

Identify Research Problems (20%) Define the problems that need to be addressed in existing projects Identify gaps in knowledge leading to future projects

Grants (20%) Provide significant contributions to obtaining research grants Write portions of research proposals Review and assemble various pieces from multiple investigators into comprehensive proposals for submission to federal funding agencies (NIH, AHRQ, and/or PCORI)

Optimize Quality of Collected Data (15%) Provide input into designing approaches to gather relevant scientific data in the most efficient manner possible

Biostatistics (10%) Interact with the biostatistics and biomedical informatics teams to review data collection methods, perform data cleaning, assemble reports ,and discuss methods of analysis

Interpret Data Reports (10%) Interpret scientific data reports generated for various research projects Draw conclusions based on data analysis reports

Manuscripts and Presentations (5%) Review and edit scientific manuscripts in preparation for submission to peer review journals Assemble content for scientific presentations and project updates Self/Team Development Provide innovative, visionary and collaborative initiative. Continue to grow your own skill set necessary in your position. Contribute to a team atmosphere in working with all internal/external customers.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s or PhD in clinical-related, public health or research field.

  • 7 or more years of significant clinical research experience serving as liaison between research and clinical staff

  • 2 or more years’ experience with grant writing and management including coordinating administrative aspects of complex grant submissions to national agencies

  • Familiarity with human subjects regulatory requirements for clinical research.

  • Other related Faculty, Staff, and Students Supervision Provided: This position reports to the Director of the CLEAR Center of the Radiology Department. Performs work under general guidance and supervision. Supervisory Responsibilities: Responsible for training, performance monitoring, and supervision of research and administrative staff Oversee data collection and verification as well as report writing and interpretation of research data Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Work Environment: Schedule is normally 8a to 5p, M-F but is not always fixed and workload does vary. The incumbent¹s first responsibility is to complete tasks rather than keep to a fixed schedule.
