Department of Medicine: Gastroenterology has an outstanding opportunity for Research Scientist/Engineer 4. Describe the field of research this position is engaged in: The Carr Lab focuses on understanding the mechanisms of insulin resistance in alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases.

Describe the purpose of the research project(s) this position supports: This position will support a range of research projects designed to use in vitro cell culture and in vivo mouse models to investigate the regulation of lipid droplet proteins and their pathogenic role in hepatic disease progression along with the general overall management of the Carr Lab. The position will also support translational studies investigating the role of lipids in human steatotic liver diseases

Describe the position’s major duties and responsibilities The Research Lab Manager/ Research Scientist Engineer will be responsible for overseeing operations of the Carr Lab. This position will work closely with the lab director and Division Head Dr. Rotonya Carr to manage the laboratory space and equipment, serve as a point of contact for all lab related communications, manage lab staff, and perform laboratory procedures in the regulation of lipid droplet proteins and their pathogenic role in hepatic disease progression. This position will be responsible for contributing to preparation of reports, papers, presentations and new proposals under deadlines. We expect they will promote new collaborations with colleagues and investigators.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Conducting laboratory experiment (70%)

• Design and perform molecular biology laboratory experiments (including wet bench assays, in vitro and in vivo mouse models, human samples) to complete ongoing projects in the lab

• In collaboration with the PI, perform data curation and analysis and figure preparation to contribute to reports, papers, presentations and new proposals • Working with the PI to prepare and submit grant proposals to support center-related research. • Managing lab related publications, presentations, and proposals and any regional or national conference. . • Working with PI to prepare and submit grant proposals to support center-related research. • Contribute technical knowledge when initiating new projects to determining feasibility of goals and objectives of the study • Monitor submission deadlines for the laboratory. • Analysis of experimental data and figure preparation. • Preparation of original research manuscripts and grant proposals.

• Supervising, managing and training of personnel hired to work in the lab, and participating in their hires- including management of laboratory staff including undergraduate, graduate, and medical students and postdocs

• Serve as a point of contact for UW researchers seeking collaboration. Providing consultation in study design and analysis to the broader UW Gastroenterology research community, including advising on appropriate sample collection and DNA extraction methods and maintain accurate and complete experimental/ protocol records

Lab Management (30%)

• Overseeing purchasing of supplies to be used in center-sponsored research including:

• Maintaining center-owned laboratory equipment. • Maintaining stocks of lab supplies and products. • Ordering lab supplies and equipment. • Organizing the laboratory space and ensuring that it is operational for user research as directed by the PI. Including serving as chemical hygiene and biosafety officer for the laboratory. • Managing all regulatory aspects of the laboratory, including serving as chemical hygiene and biosafety officer. • Managing all regulatory aspects of animal care and maintenance including • Overseeing animal colony handling and maintenance • Data collection/maintenance management for rodent colony • Updating and ensuring compliance with animal welfare protocols • Developing new animal protocols • Working with the PI to manage the center budget. • Establish and maintain collaborations with other researcher groups. • Overseeing the lab core services, including facilitating communication between users and the core service providers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Master’s degree in Biology or related field and four years of experience in a lab environment working with mice or lab animals or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED:

• PhD (Preferred) in Biology or related field • Highly motivated and creative individual who is able to work independently and as part of a team. • Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills; • Ability to manage diverse tasks; • Thirst for scientific knowledge and progress; • High degree of integrity. • Experience in cellular and molecular biology, lipid metabolism and working with in vitro and in vivo genetic models • Experience performing literature searches • Experience participating in insulin resistance and/or bench research in an academic field • Demonstrated work experience as a Research Scientist/Engineer in an academic institution • Ability to work flexible work hours
