The Indigenous Wellness Research Institute —a National Institutes of Health–designated Center of Excellence—collaborates with indigenous people in three areas: research, tribal capacity building and knowledge sharing. The Institute brings together community, tribal, academic and government resources, increasing its capacity to develop innovative, culture-centered and interdisciplinary social and behavioral research and education.

IWRI has an outstanding opportunity for a 100% Program Manager on their Wakaya project. This NIH R01, Wakaya: Rising Up for Choctaw Youth Health, a collaboration between UW investigators and Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, is an outdoor, land-based healing project that is grounded in Choctaw culture. This is a multilevel, youth leadership development randomized control trial that seeks to increase physical activity, lower sedentary behaviors by connecting youth to nature, culture, and healthy coping skills. This project draws from the academic fields of positive psychology, social work, land health leadership, and exercise sciences. It is further entrenched in Indigenous concepts of land-based healing, cultural continuity, identity, and ecological kinship.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The responsibilities for this Program Manager include:

Leading and supervising the onsite research study implementation. This will include but is not limited to: 50%

  • Lead and develop daily and weekly objectives among staff to reach our aims within our established time frames.

  • Lead implementation of research protocol and monitor participant adherence to protocol; take action to correct problems such as deviation from protocol requirements; ensure accuracy of research data.

  • Contribute to development of curriculum and protocols.

  • Oversee health intervention and behavioral health protocol.

  • Lead and coordinate recruitment of subjects.

  • Coordinate follow-up surveys and data collection.

  • Report to the Principal Investigator as appropriate for coordination and management of participant problems and concerns.

  • Report regularly regarding project progress to the Wakaya Research Director, Choctaw Nation, and UW scientists. Support and promote Oklahoma- based intervention activities and environment. 30%

  • Promote an organizational culture that is ethical, transparent, and accountable to all stakeholders.

  • Conduct and provide oversight of various administrative tasks associated with the day-to-day operations of research studies and projects including behavioral health interventions.

  • Review work and tasks given to the program staff including fidelity to the intervention.

  • Serve as liaison between the University, local, state, and tribal agencies, and other participating agencies as needed.

  • Oversee Oklahoma program staff/volunteer training and assessment.

  • Manage program resources and supplies. Coordinate key stakeholders. 10%

  • Community outreach and partnership development and maintenance, virtually and in person

  • Coordinate meetings among community, faculty, research teams, Choctaw stakeholders and support staff. Assist in the design of studies and develop research proposals. 10%

  • Identify key stakeholders and community partners best suited to meet study objectives.

  • Review proposals and regularly implement the research methods and timeline.

  • Assist with identifying, writing, and revising grant proposals. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health/Wellness/Education or related field and

  • At least 4 years of related experience, to include two years experience working with Indigenous communities, families, and or youth in a related role. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent communication skills, cultural awareness, and embrace Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge/wisdom.

  • Must be comfortable with virtual meetings and travel for in person meetings within Choctaw Nation.

  • Background of management and works well with limited supervision within strict time frames.

  • Valid Driver’s License DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A master’s degree or higher in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling with a focus on Indigenous youth preferred.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Five years experience in project coordination and working with tribal communities.

  • Experience in disease prevention, education, land-based healing, food sovereignty, environmental health, behavioral health, and wellness with Indigenous communities is also a plus.
