We're growing a team to support the Sponsored Ads business that powers the advertising experience for millions of viewers and advertisers daily. This is a unique opportunity to get in early and drive significant portions of the technical roadmap.

Amazon is investing heavily in building a world-class advertising business and developing a collection of self-service performance advertising products that drive discovery and sales. Our products are strategically important to our Retail and Marketplace businesses for driving long-term growth. We deliver billions of ad impressions and millions of clicks daily and are constantly challenging ourselves to create world-class products and an unparalleled shopping experience for our hundreds of millions of customers worldwide.

We are building a suite of new services to enable a pioneering advertising initiative, Sponsored TV, using content-rich video optimized for mobile, desktop, and over-the-top platforms. This is a greenfield project in which you will to help define every aspect of the user experience, video services, content delivery, asset management, and advertiser self-service experience.

Key job responsibilities

  • Be a thought leader and forward thinker, anticipating obstacles to success, helping avoid common failure modes, and holding us to a high standard of technical rigor and excellence in machine learning (ML).

  • Own and drive the most complex and strategic solutions across the business; responsible for many millions in revenue.

  • Define evaluation methods and metrics that measures viewer experience (e.g., ad relevance) and invent scientifically sound and scalable solutions in the streaming TV context, to improve viewer experience.

  • Seek to understand in depth the Sponsored TV offering and identify opportunities to grow our business via principled ML solutions.

  • Research, build, and deploy innovative ML solutions; working across all technical disciplines.

  • Identify untapped, high-risk technical and scientific directions, and stimulate new research directions that you will deliver on.

  • Be responsible for communicating our ML innovations to the broader internal & external scientific communities.

  • Hire, mentor, and guide senior scientists.

  • Partner with engineering leaders to build efficient and scalable solutions.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related disciplines.

  • 10+ years of applied ML experience in delivering ML-based solutions to solve real-world problems and achieve business goals, at a very large scale.

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience leading multiple ML teams to design products that satisfy a customer need.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Published research work in academic conferences or industry circles.

  • Experience shipping large-scale deep learning models for online recommendation, personalization, or search.

  • Experience partnering with engineering teams to ensure deep learning solutions meet latency requirements.

  • Experience influencing product strategy through cutting edge research in deep learning.

  • Effective verbal and written skills in communicating with both non-technical and technical audiences.

  • Excellent business judgment; the ability to balance business, product, and technology priorities.

  • Expert in machine learning, statistics, and experiment design.

  • Experience hiring and building teams of applied scientists.

  • Experience collaborating and influencing cross-functionally across science, engineering, economics, and business teams.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $159,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
