The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Manager of Program Operations - Pathology .

WORK SCHEDULE

  • 100% FTE (40 hours per week)

  • Day Shift DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) is a shared services department that operates within UW Medicine, providing clinical lab services to all UW Medicine entities, as well as to external Reference Lab customers and researchers across the U.S. and globally. UW Medicine entities consist of a complex set of multi-disciplinary clinical, business, and administrative workflows across care settings. These entities include but are not limited to UW Medical Center (UWMC), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW School of Medicine, Northwest Hospital, UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), and UW Physicians Network. DLMP is responsible for and provides medical laboratory clinical testing services to all UW Medicine, U.S. and global Reference Lab customers, clinical trials and researchers. This supports and furthers the mission of patient care, research and teaching. The Histology Manager will need to understand departmental and organizational processes, systems and interdependencies related to clinical, research, and reference laboratory operations. This role will have to have an expert knowledge of the intricacies of everyday laboratory functions/operations, processes, policies, and expectations within Anatomic Pathology services. Leadership skills required for this position are financial, operational, and supervisory abilities. This position is required to foster a collaborative environment; ensure/improve clinical quality excellence; maintain regulatory readiness; embrace our teaching/training role as an academic institution in support of our mission to provide high quality and cost-effective patient care.The pathology section of DLMP provides clinical services in all areas of pathology, providing diagnostic procedures and analysis for more than 80,000 cases a year. We provide comprehensive diagnostic and personalized consultative services to physicians, community hospitals, independent laboratories and other health-care organizations, by combining sophisticated testing and Informatics capabilities of fully accredited laboratories with the resources of an academic and teaching institution in its delivery of Pathology services. Pathology is expanding and is adding new labs and additional specimens this year and every year. The Histology Manager is necessary to continue our dedication to excellence in patient care and to teach/train new healthcare professionals.This position combines administrative, managerial, and operational oversight of the UWMC Histology division within the Anatomic Pathology Section of DLMP. These are all clinical teaching laboratories with hospital-specific specialty services operating within a large, complex department. DLMP is an internationally renowned department, with strong teaching and research programs and clinical service activities, including the development of new diagnostic tests. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Interview, hire, and orient new leadership staff to maintain qualified 24-hour workforce coverage.

  • Ensure and hold staff accountable for training, continual education and in-service education for staff.

  • Evaluate performance and deliver timely performance evaluations; provide fair and immediate feedback regarding job performance for staff.

  • Counsel and mentor staff to improve performance; recognize superior performance; develop performance improvement action plans; recommend corrective action as necessary.

  • Hold staff accountable for creating and maintaining a collaborative and blame free environment where accountability is expected and the Service Culture Guidelines are a standard.

  • Build an environment where everyone is empowered to report areas of concern to Management and/or the Department Compliance Officer/Committee.

  • Perform corrective actions up to and including termination.

  • Serves as point person for College of American Pathologists (CAP) and our work with them in conjunction with Laboratory Director and Administrative Director/Assistant Director

  • Administers/coordinates/proctors proficiency testing or compliance with proficiency testing with staff and faculty

  • Involved in our biennial CAP self-inspection and biennial CAP on-site inspection

  • Ensure procedural accuracy in Media Lab and staff compliance

  • Keeps faculty and staff up to date of all changes in CAP regulations to ensure compliance and aligns goals of changes with the departmental goalsOperational/Technical: 40%

  • Provides oversight of frontline staff in the Histology lab at all levels on daily operational issues - Serves as content expert for all laboratory and management needs to align with hospital goals and regulatory requirements

  • Possesses technical knowledge of Histology procedures and pre-analytical processes, policies, and procedures as necessary for the supervision of this laboratory section

  • Consistently communicates to Lab Leadership and Faculty(s)

  • Possesses excellent interpersonal and team management skills to effectively collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other staff

  • Solves problems through collaboration with section chiefs, lab leadership, staff, and others - Institutes and manages the division’s electronic document control system

  • Plans and implements continuing education programs

  • Works on projects to support quality/service/education/growth

  • Ensure supply management is monitored and prevent shortages

  • Oversee machine maintenance and repairsRegulatory and Compliance: 15%

  • Training and staff awareness including but not limited to compliance, regulatory, safety, pre and post-analytical processes, the need to follow acceptable laboratory policies, etc.

  • Follows established policies and procedures at all times.

  • Ensure staff orient and continually educate and enforce safety standards and maintain a safe environment.

  • Delegate responsibilities, duties, and tasks to optimize the use of staff time, skills, and expertise while ensuring a high-quality service.

  • Maintains sufficient skill with personal computer hardware and software related to the use of spreadsheets, databases, word processing, and presentation programs that are integral to successful job efforts.

  • Meet regularly with staff to communicate initiatives, expectations, and technical information.Fiscal: 5%

  • Responsible for FTE budgets, supplies, annual budget proposals

  • Interacts with vendors and outside agencies to review and recommend products for potential use in ongoing and developing programs.

  • Management and acquisition of laboratory equipment and inventory.Special Duties: 5%

  • Assumes additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by to include but not limited to the Clinical Faculty, Director of Clinical Operations, or other appropriate leaders REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Life Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Business or other related fields

  • Experience may substitute for education
