Prime Air is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to design and develop power electronics hardware and related electrical power systems for Prime Air Drones. This includes, battery chargers, DC-DC converters, DC-AC inverters, Motor Controllers and power distribution systems. In this role you will be working with our Seattle based team to help to deploy new hardware and electrical power systems for Prime Air Drones. You will work with internal and external vendors to support hardware development, manufacturing and test. You will also be supporting other ongoing development and testing efforts for the Drone.

Key job responsibilities

The ideal candidate will help the team in the following ways:

-Designs, develops, and tests power electronics hardware and analog/digital devices components such as inverters, battery chargers, DC-DC converters, Battery Management Unit (BMS) and protection circuitry.

-Conduct electrical power system architecture development, design concepts and trades.

-Design circuits, perform electrical analyses, select components, create electrical schematics and perform/support PCB layout.

-Support engineering trades, estimates and interact with suppliers/partners on critical components and develop hardware from concept to mass production

-Support developing hardware and component level requirements/specifications

-Increase the engineering rigor behind designs, verification, and documentation.

-Perform design analyses, modeling and simulation for circuits and key component.

-Test prototype hardware and systems in labs

-Identify and incorporate design for reliability/manufacturing elements & iterate!

-Develop technology road map for power electronics and electrical power systems for Drones

Basic Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related fields

  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience developing power electronics

  • Understanding of power semiconductor switches and diodes, and their characteristics

  • Understanding of devices built upon various materials such as Si, SiC, and GaN

  • Experience designing and analyzing inverter and converter circuits including gate drivers

  • Knowledge and experience with embedded control of power electronic circuits

  • Skilled working in lab environment with high voltages and currents

  • Experience using software tools such as Spice, PLECS, Mathcad, Ansys Simplorer, and Matlab

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced development environment

  • Experience leading PCBA Board bring-Up and validation testing

  • Proficient with PCB design tools (Altium preferred)

  • Experience with CAD software (CATIA preferred)

  • Experience in requirements development and documentation

  • Experience in aerospace or automotive industry

  • Experience with written and Verbal communication in aerospace and/or automotive industry settings

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering

  • Experience working with commercial standards (DO-254, DO-160G, DO-178)

  • Experience with EMI/EMC filter design for power electronics products

  • Experience developing aviation power electronic hardware

  • Experience with bidirectional power conversion

  • Knowledge or experience using FEA simulation tool such as Ansys Maxwell/Q3D or equivalent

  • Knowledge or experience with dual active bridge DC/DC modeling and control

  • Proficiency in Python, Matlab, or equivalent scripting languages

  • Knowledge of Li-Ion batteries and battery system architecture and design

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $128,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
