Under the supervision of the UW College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) Director, the Recruiter/Academic Adviser will recruit and advise migrant/seasonal farmworker (MSFW) students to UW CAMP. The Recruiter/Academic Adviser will represent UW CAMP at campus, local, and national events. The Recruiter/Adviser will be the primary liaison between prospective UW CAMP students, their parents, and statewide community organizations and agencies serving the MSFW population.

CAMP is a federally funded Department of Education program under the Office of Migrant Education that is subject to renewal every five years.

This position requires an empathetic approach when recruiting MSFW students. The position requires constant follow-up with students and their families. This position also requires forming and maintaining a collaborative relationship with agricultural employers, migrant education programs, community organizations and agencies, and other CAMP programs in the state. This position also requires extensive travel for recruitment and outreach purposes.

The CAMP Recruiter/Academic Adviser will develop partnerships and work with the K-12 school districts in Washington to promote higher education opportunities for MSFW youth at the UW.

The CAMP Recruiter/Academic Adviser will recruit 50 CAMP-eligible students to the UW every academic year. This position will collaborate with state agencies to promote UW CAMP. They will also engage in student advising, allowing the students to feel the support that will carry them through until they complete their baccalaureate degree. The CAMP Recruiter/Adviser will work with OMA&D Academic Counseling Services (ACS) unit personnel to best serve CAMP participants during their time at UW.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Student Recruitment - 45% This position requires extensive travel throughout the state of Washington. The Recruiter will recruit CAMP-eligible students and confirm their MSFW status. Assist students with the university's application process, registration, and financial aid. Visit students and families in off-worksite locations. Serve as liaison between UW CAMP and the Washington K-12 Migrant Education Programs (MEP) and cooperating community agencies. Coordinate day-to-day recruiting and outreach activities at non-traditional locations such as wineries, ranches, churches, community centers, and social gathering locations. Arrange campus visits. Gather and disseminate information on student resources available at institutional, local, and national levels. Gathers and distributes information about local agencies that will serve participants and their families. Stay current with UW recruitment information as well as academic and advising requirements. Present both in English and Spanish about UW and CAMP to students, partners, families, and key stakeholders. The Recruiter/Adviser will maintain student data and records and produce spreadsheet reports tracking potential CAMP students. Additionally, they will assist the Director in developing and implementing recruitment and outreach plans.

Academic Advising - 35% Work with the CAMP full-time Adviser in advising first-year CAMP students; monitor their academic performance and inform the Director of student concerns. Recommend strategies for improvement beyond the first year of college. Assist students in developing Individualized Career Plans, academic placement and career assessment, financial aid information, tutoring, and supplemental instruction arrangements. Assist students in planning their selection of courses. Assist students with their unique needs; assist faculty, administrators, staff, and parents in recognizing these needs. Refer students who require more specialized advising to appropriate departments on-campus or agencies in the community. Stays current with academic and advising requirements. Lead CAMP's Academic Support Group for Winter and Spring quarters.

Projects and Events - 15% Meet regularly with the Director; participate in CAMP's ongoing planning and evaluation activities. Prepare and maintain CAMP forms and other documents related to participants. Assists with gathering data for annual reports on particular areas of responsibility as requested by the Director or Principal Investigator. Assist the CAMP team with events and services intended to retain students. Assist with planning and implementing staff development activities. Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings. Assist with other OMA&D services as requested by the Director. Travel and participate in regional, state, and national conferences sponsored by the US Department of Education and the Office of Migrant Education, as the budget may allow.

Assist the CAMP Program Manager with planning and implementing the Dare to Dream Summer Academies. Dare to Dream involves hiring undergraduate students, training and preparing for the week-long program, event planning, and staying on-campus during the length of the academies.

Other Duties as Assigned - 5% This position will require frequent travel for recruitment and occasional weekend events throughout the year. The CAMP Recruiter/Adviser leads some seminar sessions throughout the academic year.

Recruit students who are eligible for the College Assistance Migrant Program. Gather the documentation necessary to prove the student qualifies for the federally funded CAMP Program designed to serve MSFW college students. Develop and implement strategies to support the retention and graduation of MSFW students served by CAMP

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Communications, or any related field and a minimum of 2-3 year's experience working with MSFW, under-represented, low-income, and first-generation college students; outreach and recruitment experience for an institution of higher education.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: A passion for serving the MSFW population (students and their families); interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy; assessment, planning, facilitation, and advocacy skills. Skilled in monitoring student performance; knowledge of college and university admissions processes; knowledge of college financial aid process; ability to work successfully with students, parents, and university staff; ability to plan, schedule, and perform a variety of technical duties for the program; ability to prepare correspondence and reports. Learn, apply, and explain federally funded programs' policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Knowledge of college and community resources for MSFW individuals; computer database experience; excellent written and verbal communication skills; Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Desired:
Master’s degree desired. Experience working with federal programs that support the educational development of low-income, first-generation college attendees, underrepresented students, and students from migrant and seasonal farm-worker backgrounds. Significant experience working with migrant and seasonal farm-worker students in a college or university environment. Experience working in bicultural environments and engaging students and families.
