UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW’s IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW Medicine, and research operations around the world, partnering with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service." Data & Applications (D&A) is the division in UW-IT that runs the university’s academic and business systems, productivity platforms, enterprise integrations, learning analytics and data for decision-making and is also responsible for the accessibility of UW’s digital resources. Teaching & Learning Systems evaluates, develops, integrates, and supports technologies that enable others to teach, learn, and innovate. These solutions and applications are used by students, faculty, staff, researchers, clinicians, and external partners.

Student Information Systems (SIS) a unit within UW-IT, develops and maintains software systems that directly support the entire student lifecycle - admissions, academic planning, registration, financial aid, and student accounts - as well as academic support systems such as curriculum management tools. SP actively partners with owners and users of these systems to evolve and modernize them (e.g. tri-campus business stakeholders, administrators, student advisers, and students themselves). We are seeking a Business Analyst/ Service Manager with project management and service management experience to join us in these efforts. We are especially interested in those with a background in higher education or academic support services.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Systems Analysis, Liberal Arts or Sciences, or related field or experience.

  • Four or more years of experience doing progressively more complex business analysis within a project or program environment such as scope definition, requirements gathering and management, business process re-engineering, system configuration, etc. as part of a project, program, or service.

  • Understanding and working knowledge of various software development and service management methodologies/concepts (e.g. Agile, Kanban, ITIL, Waterfall) and the demonstrated ability to coordinate and lead others in the completion of a goal.

  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities, ideally including a mix of both quantitative and qualitative methods for understanding and documenting end-user and business owner requirements, and then translating these business requirements to technical requirements.

  • Working knowledge of software development processes.

  • Self-starter, able to manage multiple priorities and tasks in a dynamic environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a cooperative effort.

  • Ability to deal with trade-offs, conflict, and change management in a collaborative and positive way.

  • Ability to critically think to solve difficult problems with complex solutions and widespread impact

  • Ability to present complex technical material to non-technical audiences in an approachable way.

  • Comfortable working with diverse teams, and willingness to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. DESIRED:

  • Experience in a major Higher Education institution, preferably the University of Washington, especially with regard to the Student Journey and/or Student Information Systems, Academic Services, Student Administration, and/or Financial Aid

  • Ability to develop and present information or proposals that support decision making among a diverse set of stakeholders and business partners.

  • Relevant coursework in business analysis, business requirement documentation, standards-based modeling technologies, quality assurance, and/or project management.

  • Working knowledge or experience with service management methodologies/concepts; experience managing a software-based service and understanding of the ITIL framework.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform data analysis including querying standard databases using SQL.

  • Experience with system modernization CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Hybrid, open office environmentThis position contributes in a collaborative teamwork environment. Collaboration is supported through a shared space.working environment, ad hoc meetings focused on problem-solving, and the use of a variety of communication tools. Responsibility to work varied hours as needed to meet project deadlines and to accomplish work assignments on which others’ activities depend. Expectation to go over and above as necessary to achieve agreed upon goals and outcomes within the student program. Daily interactions with other team members, subject matter experts and stakeholders at all levels of the organization.UW-IT allows working from home 1-3 days a week; attending any meetings and events in-person when it facilitates team building and collaboration is expected.
