Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Bioinformatics Analyst I in Seattle, Washington

The lab of Dr. Frederick Matsen in the Computational Biology program at Fred Hutch is seeking a highly motivated candidate interested in phylogenetics and the adaptive immune system. Our research group develops and applies methods to learn about evolution and immunology from molecular sequence data such as DNA and RNA. This is a rich source of fun and difficult problems in math/CS/(bio)-statistics, with real-world consequences. You can find out more about our group by visiting our group website.

Applicants should have experience in bioinformatics and pipeline construction, and should be comfortable with mathematical and probabilistic concepts. Applicants should submit:

  • a CV or resume,

  • a code sample showing work that you are proud of. This has to be nontrivial, but doesn’t have to be long (about a page, but can be embedded in a larger file). The code sample need not be elaborate, but should demonstrate what you consider to be clean code. Ideally it would be publicly accessible, e.g. on GitHub, but if that’s not possible an attachment is fine too.

This role will be performed in person at the Steam Plant building in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle.

  • Develop, test, and implement standardized analytical pipelines to evaluate and benchmark computational methods

  • Provide support to Fred Hutch researchers working with phylogenetic data

  • Participate in weekly staff meeting to discuss ongoing projects and provide advice and support to colleagues

  • Provide figures & written sections describing methods and results for manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications generated by Fred Hutch researchers

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline is required

  • Experience with bioinformatics and pipeline construction is preferred

  • General proficiency in mathematics and probability is preferred

  • Proficient with Linux/Unix shell scripting (primarily bash) and possess strong programming skills in Python. Knowledge of C++ a plus

  • Self-motivated, perform in a highly independent manner, and possess strong interest in the biological sciences

  • Solid communication skills (both verbal and written) and organizational skills are essential, as is the ability to be creative in problem-solving situations

The annual base salary range for this position is from $65,484 to $96,349 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
