Skidmore College Assistant Director, Athletic Marketing and Communications in Saratoga Springs, New York

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director, Athletic Communications and Marketing, in coordination with the Associate Director, Athletic Communications and Marketing and the Director of Marketing and Engagement, tells the Skidmore Athletics story by managing an integrated athletics and communications program that includes game-day coverage, sports information and statistics, web coordination, social media management, and photography (incl. freelance) for 19 teams, intramural sports, and related Athletics events.

The Assistant Director is primarily a marketer, strategist, content creator, reporter, and data manager. Through their work, they also have direct influence on the reputation and reach of the Skidmore Thoroughbreds brand. In coordination with other members of the Office of Communications and Marketing, the manager is also a key advocate for Athletics within a network of College-wide communications programs designed to recruit students, engage donors, and elevate the overall reputation of Skidmore.

The Assistant Director is a member of the Marketing and Engagement team within the Office of Communications and Marketing and reports to the Associate Director, Athletic Communications and Marketing. When needed, the Assistant Director is a proxy or back-up in the absence of the Associate Director. The Assistant Director hires and manages multiple student workers (2-4 per semester).

Primary Job Duties:

  • Manage game-day reports for 19 varsity teams by composing accurate and timely web stories, publishing to SkidmoreAthletics.com, and coordinating any related league or media content needs.

  • Manage game day statistics and ensure Skidmore Athletics is compliant with all Liberty League and NCAA data requirements.

  • Manage the social media strategy and content calendar behind the primary @SkidmoreAthletics and @SkidmoreSports accounts, representing the Skidmore Thoroughbred brand online while inspiring, engaging, and educating priority audiences (fans, athletes, prospective students and families, alumni, and donors).

  • Manage all aspects of SkidmoreAthletics.com and co-coordinate vendor relationships (SideArm, StatCrew).

  • Collaborate with Skidmore Athletics leadership – Athletics Director, Assistant/Associate Directors and Coaches – to curate and disseminate athletics marketing content and support daily communications needs, including preparing programs for games and special events, nominations for league and national awards, and various scheduling and operations duties.

  • Capture photos of individual players, teams, and other athletics-related content for College marketing use. Supervise freelance photographers. Coordinate with other College photographers for coverage.

  • Hire and supervise a team of up to four student marketing assistants. Determine job responsibilities, hold weekly meetings, assign and review work. Serve as a mentor.

  • Occasionally supervise part-time employees and assistant coaches specific to their in-game sports information responsibilities.

  • Contribute as a core member of the ad-hoc Office of Communications and Marketing content team, writing occasional news or magazine stories and sharing athletics insights to help the whole team tell impactful stories.

  • Collaborate with representatives of Admissions and Advancement in the Office of Communications to support Athletics messaging and content related to the engagement of prospective students and donors.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: BA/BS in communications or related field of study or equivalent

Experience: Three or more years of experience in a collegiate athletic media relations or sports information office or other related field at the college or university level, as well as experience with digital media.

Skills: A demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with student-athletes, coaches, athletic administration and communications and marketing colleagues. Proficiency with the following software programs: BoxOut, Genius Sports/NCAA Live Stats, Stat Crew, Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop) and Microsoft Excel. Experience with Sidearm Web platform. Experience managing social media accounts on multiple platforms; experience and knowledge of social networks and social communications; demonstrated knowledge of social media best practices, including web writing, photography, video, metadata, tagging, analytics, social media and SEO, content strategy, and strategic campaign development. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong abilities in writing, editing, web design, social media, and video content production and editing. Demonstrated problem-solving, strong leadership, communication, organizational, and team-building skills/capabilities; ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks/projects in a fast-paced environment.

Pay range: $55,000 - $62,000
