As a Technical Specialist for Sarasota County, this position is responsible for reviewing site development projects for compliance with Sarasota County Unified Development Code and other related standards, ordinances and state regulations. This candidate will join a dedicated high-performing team of County professionals, who administer various aspects of the Land Development Regulations including residential subdivisions, commercial developments, plats, right-of-way projects and lot-drainage reviews. Review Land Development project design plans

  • Review site development plans, pre-submittals and pre-applications, subdivision and commercial plans, plats, Community Development Districts (CDD), right-of-way permits, lot drainage reviews, bonds, variances, exemptions, etc. for code compliance.

  • Research flood, coastal, environmental, zoning, historical, etc. requirements of applications.

  • Provide customers with code clarification, permit procedures, status of applications, etc.

  • Provide project comments in a timely manner consistent with Land Development process timeframes.

  • Conduct cost estimates and other permit reviews as required.

  • Meet with developers, engineers and other staff to discuss review comments, design standard requirements and other applicable standards.

  • Ensure projects are signed off by Professional Engineer. Manage project files.

  • Respond to and handles issues and concerns from the public regarding development issues.

Site Visits

  • Conduct site visits to support Lot Drainage and Right-of-Way inspection team for permit reviews, inquiries and complaints. Conducts site visits to support the Land Development Inspectors to ensure all is in compliance with pre-construction and construction activity as reviewed by the LDS Engineer. Attend Pre-Construction meetings.

Presentations and meeting attendance/participation

  • Attend development pre-submission meetings, weekly plan review meetings and subdivision final inspections.

  • May attend, present, and participate in meetings such as BCC, community, public or other agency meetings/workshops related to assigned projects.

  • May serve as liaison to various groups, including: the Development Review Committee (DRC), the Land Development construction inspection team, Survey and Mapping, Planning, Zoning, Building Division, Environmental Protection Division, Public Works Department, Public Utilities Department, Office of the County Attorney, and others.

  • External agency coordination may include FDOT, FDEP, SWFWMD, adjacent cities and counties, and others.

    E-Work/Hybrid Work: Currently this position is eligible to e-work up to 2 days per week! After you complete your first six months, contingent on work requirements and other factors, you’ll be eligible for this fantastic benefit.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

About You

To thrive in this position, you must have-

Technical Specialist I:

  • Bachelor’s degree with major course work in civil engineering or related engineering field.

  • Prior related engineering work experience, engineering internship, or Engineer-in-Training certificate granted by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers is preferred.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience or technical, engineering-related project experience may substitute on a year for year basis for the degree.

Technical Specialist II:

  • BS degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or highly related field and two years professional level civil engineering experience.

  • Possession of a valid Engineer in Training certificate granted by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers.

  • Master’s degree in related field may substitute for one year of required experience.

  • Technical, engineering-related project experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis, if candidates are not available that fully meet the minimum requirements of the position.

About Everything Else

Technical Specialist I: Starting Pay Range: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 based on experience. Technical Specialist II: Starting Pay Range: $63,000.00 - $73,000.00 based on experience.
