Job Description:

Planning & Program Support:

Plan, organize, schedule, and conduct a variety of program activities including writing blogs and fact sheets, posting educational content to social media, and creating presentations. Responsible for developing and maintaining online courses, conducting webinars, and creating videos to support Extension Programs and events related to water conservation and water quality. This includes needs assessments in partnership with Water Resources Agent and Public Utilities, developing a workplan in line with identified priorities, creating educational materials, building partnerships, and distributing to priority audiences.

Outreach and Implementation of Water Conservation Programs:

Identifies needed outreach and education program initiatives within water resources topics aligned with Public Utilities’ priorities and creates and implements them. Outreach to high-volume water users for education on efficiency best practices and for recruiting, scheduling, and implementing irrigation evaluations, in partnership with volunteers. Attends advisory meetings and fosters relationships with community partners. Driving to different outreach locations will be required.

Evaluation and Reporting:

Maintain outreach and education contacts, send follow-up surveys and track outcomes, contribute to monthly and quarterly reporting efforts. Identifies new opportunities for collaboration.

Research and Data Tasks:

Manage data related to the conservation programs; use data to target program participants; manage data related to the bay-friendly fertilizing program.

Training Development:

Responsible for the design, development, and implementation of training. Develop and improve knowledge of water conservation subject matter, outcome tracking, determining clientele needs, methods for reaching and teaching clientele, and other on-the-job training as assigned.

Other duties assigned - Emergency Management requirements and other duties as directed by supervisor and County Extension Director (CED).

Expected Salary:

$34632 - $53139 annually, commensurate with experience

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong written and oral communication skills, to include accuracy; attention to detail; creative writing and ability to write correspondence and publications as required.

Background in science.

Skills in communicating technical and scientific information in a relatable way.

Web design and other IT skills including proficiency in Cavas and ArcGIS.

Ability to access, coordinate, and utilize University, county, municipal, and community resources in the assigned area of discipline.

Ability to develop and maintain accurate monitoring systems, tracking systems, records and reports.

Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.

Skill in the use of standard office computer equipment and software applications.

Demonstrated organizational, time-management skills and ability to handle multiple projects at the same time.

Ability to interact with personnel and the public in a positive and effective manner, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships and deliver excellent customer service.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

SUPERVISION:

This position will not supervise others. The incumbent will be directly supervised by Sarasota’s Water Resources agent for day-to-day tasks and issues, and the program overall is overseen by the County Extension Director. Guidance will be provided to the program specialist through verbal and written means, in-person, via email or internal digital tools including Microsoft Teams.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE:

Typical work week for this position will be Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00 pm. Occasional evenings and weekends will be necessary for attending community outreach programs. Depending on the responsibilities, workload, and candidate, it is possible this position could range between 30 to 40 hours per week.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:

Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida driver’s license.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION:

Work is primarily performed both in indoor, climate-controlled environment as well as outdoor environments. Depending on assignment, this position may require bending, walking, sitting, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, repetitive motions, and depth perception. Depending on assignment, may require frequent lifting of 10-30 pounds. Remote working part time may be considered depending on candidate and workload/ responsibilities.

PROGRAM DIRECTION AND DEVELOPMENT:

The program specialist has specific tasks to complete and follow through with, and will also be expected to provide suggestions and ideas for greater efficiency and effectiveness in customer service and program delivery.

COMMUNICATION:

Program specialist will identify and perform education and outreach to external target audiences and communicate regularly with internal partners. This will be on a daily and weekly basis.

MONETARY RESPONSIBILITY:

Program specialist will track expenses and use of program funds. They may be tasked with purchase responsibilities.

The program specialist supports primary agents with outreach and implementation of programs on behalf of UF|IFAS Extension & Sustainability Sarasota County and Sarasota County Utilities.
