Overall Responsibilities

As a Mechanical Engineer in Surgical Robotics, you will be supporting and developing a next generation of surgical robotic instrumentation that provides robust clinical value in an innovative manner. This instrumentation completes the translation of the clinician’s movements from robotic end effectors to tissue manipulation within the body. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who wants to help us redefine the world of medical robotics.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Surgical Robotics Instruments and Accessories Integration Team, you will contribute to the development and support of robotic instrumentation for a surgical robotic platform.

  • Progress development of novel instrumentation spanning from feasibility through to product launch.

  • Solve and perform rout cause analysis of failures seen when instrumentation are used with the Robotics Platform.

  • Build multi-functional relationships with a multitude of different department representatives.

  • Design and create prototypes using in-house rapid prototyping capabilities.

  • Provide hands-on, troubleshooting, process and manufacturing support as well as designing, implementing, integrating and testing solutions in a fast pace environment with a quick development cycle.

  • Create design solutions utilizing engineering methods with good documentation processes, releasing design documentation through an ECO process in accordance with the company design control process.

  • Establish individual goals consistent with overall project goals.

  • Provide design engineering support for certain aspects of production (including new features, yield improvements, DFM, process related cost reductions, etc.)

  • Must be capable of working independently and in a team while being flexible, self-motivated, curious and willing to revolutionize the world of medical robotics.


Education & Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree with at least 1 year of mechanical engineering experience

  • Academic knowledge of mechanical design and root cause analysis, preferably through hands-on projects.

  • Strong creative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Proven knowledge of component manufacturing processes (including machining, sheet metal, rapid prototyping, injection molding, etc.)

  • Mechanical design and analysis skills including statics, dynamics, kinematics, strength of materials and stress analysis.

  • Proven experience and proficiency using parametric solid modeling and CAD software to design and document parts and assemblies.

  • Adept at communicating in a collaborative team environment and seeking optimum solutions with team members.

    Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Advanced Degree

  • SolidWorks experience

  • Previous start-up experience, and/or a resourceful innovative nature with an ability to streamline or develop efficient processes

  • Exp in a medical device setting or other highly regulated field


  • This position is located in Santa Clara, CA and requires up to 10% (Domestic/International) travel
