Amazon Applied Scientist II, Human-in-loop ML/AI Services in Santa Clara, California

Are you interested in generative artificial intelligence (AI)? Do you have experience with Large Language Models (LLMs) or Large Vision and Language Models?

We are seeking an Applied Scientist for the Human-in-loop ML/AI Services team at AWS. Our team's mission is to make LLMs and LVMs available across data driven products and businesses. Our vision is to bring the best of humans and foundation models together to improve the entire machine learning model development lifecycle (the loop). We specialize in developing managed Human-in-loop ML/AI services (HIL) such as SageMaker Ground Truth for model training, and Mechanical Turk for crowd intelligence. Our strategy is to bring the best of foundation models to tasks such as ground truth generation via steering large generative models.

This is a role that combines science leadership, organizational ability, technical strength, product focus and business understanding. It will be your job to help develop ML science for human-in-the-loop problems and work closely with the engineering team to deliver for our customers. You will partner with senior scientists on the team to inform the roadmap, mentor others, and be a role model for Amazon's Leadership Principles.

Strong technical skill and experience with LLMs or LVMs is required. A solid foundation of Machine Learning combined with experience in Natural Language Processing and/or Computer Vision will set you up for success in this role. Our customers are highly technical and the solutions we build for them are coupled to technical feasibility.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of building models for business application experience

  • PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of CS, CE, ML or related field experience

  • Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals

  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language

  • Experience in any of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Unix/Linux

  • Experience in professional software development

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $222,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
