General Description

Are you ready to take the next step in your accounting career? SUNY Niagara is seeking a talented and driven Assistant Controller to join our dynamic Business Office team!

As the Assistant Controller, you’ll play a pivotal role in managing the College’s financial operations while working in a collaborative, supportive environment. The Assistant Controller directly supports the Controller in the development, maintenance, and oversight of all accounting operations for the College. The successful candidate will have exceptional financial acumen, strong leadership abilities, and a proven ability to manage accounting operations in compliance with institutional policies and applicable regulations. This position will directly support the Controller in maintaining financial systems, and ensuring fiscal and budgetary control. The role requires excellent analytical skills, proficiency with financial software, and the ability to effectively lead and manage a team of accounting professionals as this position is responsible for the management of the accounting staff in the Business Office. This position also acts as the primary backup to the Controller in their absence.

Typical Work Activities

  1. Assists the Controller in the preparation of the annual College budget, manages accounting staff in the compilation of departmental budgets, and prepares budget workpapers as assigned.

  2. Assists with coordinating the annual College independent audit, reviews and/or prepares audit workpapers as needed, participates in the development of the audited financial statements, and ensures all appropriate audit recommendations and concerns are properly addressed.

  3. Prepares monthly Board of Trustee financial reports.

  4. Directly supervises and trains grant accounting staff to ensure work assignments are completed accurately and efficiently. Performs annual staff evaluations for direct reports.

  5. Maintains the College’s cash position, monitors cash flow analysis, advises management on the short-term investment portfolio, and ensures compliance with the short-term investment policy.

  6. Performs monthly bank reconciliations of all College bank accounts ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

  7. Prepares accurate and timely analysis of College’s self-insured health insurance plan with detailed internal reports to assist management in making informed decisions that ensure the sustainability of the self-funded plan.

  8. Coordinates active and retired employee benefit efforts between Human Resources and Payroll to ensure accurate enrollment and contribution calculations in various benefit plans.

  9. Reviews and approves all weekly accounts payable vouchers for payment to include adequacy of budget, proper documentation for audit purposes, and compliance with the College’s purchasing policy.

  10. Works with the Director to ensure College policies and practices are in accordance with Federal, State, and Local (Niagara County) Government regulations, State University of New York ( SUNY ) policies and procedures, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP ).

  11. Collaborates with management to develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and strong internal controls.

  12. Performs other duties as assigned by the Controller or Vice President of Administration.

    Essential Functions

Ability to communicate clearly in writing and orally; maintain excellent working relationships among employees; ability to create and maintain spreadsheets; ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously while adhering to deadlines. Ability to navigate relationships with diverse populations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning;

  • Three (3) years’ experience in financial accounting, data analysis, and report preparation;

  • Two (2) years’ supervisory experience;

  • Demonstrated proficiency using ERP and Microsoft Office applications.

    Desirable Qualifications

  • Master of Business Administration ( MBA ) from an accredited institution of higher learning or Certified Public Accountant ( CPA ).

  • Experience in governmental accounting or higher education preferred;

  • Experience with the Ellucian Banner ERP system;

  • Ability to understand and interpret accounting rules and regulations, including GASB and GAAP .
