Cal Poly Corporation Laboratory Technician (Lab Tech) in San Luis Obispo, California

Job Description Summary

The BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California is seeking a motivated individual able to design and fabricate equipment for the California strawberry industry. The successful candidate is expected to perform his/her duties within Lab 6 of theBRAElabs. They will also have access to a computer in the mezzanine area in Lab 6. Qualified candidates should be in possession of a BS degree in BioResource and agricultural Engineering or any related fields. The candidate should have prior experience in design and fabrication of specialty agricultural equipment, especially those used in the strawberry industry. Qualified candidates should be proficient in English to provide guidance for student workers and industry representatives. Candidates with a background or prior experience in machine fabrication will be given preference.

The selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Peter Livingston.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in BioResource Engineering, BioSystems Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or related fields from anABETaccredited program
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe working environment
  • Demonstrated ability to operate fabrication equipment, including plasma cutter, band saw, machining tools, hand tools, and weld steel, aluminum, and stainless steel
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to assist the industry partners and researchers in developing relevant field/lab projects pertinent to the research questions
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills to interact with students, colleagues and industry partners
  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams and independently
  • Desire to mentor undergraduate students
  • Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance
  • Possession of a valid California Drivers License and satisfactory driving record
  • A background check is required for all regular benefited positions
  • The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth inCSUExecutive Order 1083 as a condition of employment

Physical Demands

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone
  • Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrist to operate a computer keyboard and advanced fabrication equipment
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials, plans, and specifications
  • Sitting or standing or carrying 50 pounds of supplies for extended periods of time

Typical Essential Functions

  • Design specialty equipment for the strawberry industry
  • Fabricate specialty equipment for the strawberry industry
  • Test equipment in fields located from Santa Maria to Watsonville
  • Host Industry events, panels and trainings in the field and at the annual Cal Poly Strawberry Center field day
  • Collaborate with various strawberry industry and research partners
  • Generate ideas for sensory-driven research projects and industry training
  • Help and assist undergraduate students for their research projects: design and execute experiments, analyze data, and support the completion of strawberry related projects
  • Assist in the compilation of data and results for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Assist in diffusing the published research to the strawberry industry through a newsletter and/or an Industry Field Day
  • Work with collaborators from industry by consulting on the design of their projects
  • Train undergraduate students on design, fabrication, and testing of strawberry related equipment
  • Maintain and supportBRAElab safety rules
  • Perform other duties assigned
