Cal Poly Corporation Associate Director, Marketing and Communications in San Luis Obispo, California

Job Description Summary

The Associate Director of Marketing and Communications is a senior management position responsible for overseeing the development and execution of comprehensive marketing communication strategies. This role requires a blend of strategic thinking, hands-on management and creative vision. The Associate Director will collaborate with university and Cal Poly Partner leaders to align marketing initiatives with organizational goals and ensure adherence to brand standards. They will manage day-to-day department activities, supervise staff and oversee vendor relationships to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of marketing materials. Additionally, the Associate Director will play a key role in analyzing the effectiveness of marketing efforts and providing strategic insights for continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year university.
  • Minimum seven years of progressive experience in marketing/communication leadership roles, preferably in higher education or auxiliary organizations.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and oral communication skills.
  • Proven experience with project and vendor management, including budget development and resource management.
  • Creativity, initiative and team-orientation.
  • Experience in content strategy development across multiple channels.
  • Proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and analytics.
  • Budgeting and fiscal management experience.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and other relevant software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Valid California Drivers License and satisfactory driving record.
  • Willingness to work evenings or weekends as needed.
  • A background check is required for all regular benefited positions.

Typical Essential Functions

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of marketing communication campaigns, including design, art direction, video production, illustration, web design, and photo selection, in alignment with university brand standards.
  • Consult with Cal Poly Partners and university leaders to develop and execute marketing communication initiatives to achieve strategic goals.
  • Develop and operationalize comprehensive marketing communication plans for annual planning and campaign-specific outreach.
  • Foster creativity to generate innovative ideas, relationships, systems and promotions.
  • Manage the content development process from end to end working with both internal and external content contributors and creative resources.
  • Utilize customer insights, marketing trends and best practices to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Effectively communicate business issues to both internal and external audiences.
  • Lead all public relations efforts, seeking online and traditional media exposure, writing press releases, preparing talking points, speeches and presentations and working with appropriate staff managing crisis communications.
  • Oversee social media strategies and activities, i cluding but not limited to Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram platforms.
  • Develop and launch seasonal campus events and coordinate marketing activities for multiple venues.
  • Analyze, monitor and evaluate marketing efforts for effectiveness, adjusting as necessary.
  • Administer department and stakeholder marketing calendars to ensure timely completion of activities.
  • Manage projects and budgets, providing ongoing communication and follow-through with all parties involved.
  • Negotiate and plan media placements to meet marketing objectives.
  • Develop and adhere to annual marketing budgets.
  • Share Cal Poly Partners mission and vision and model its values as a member of the Senior Management staff
  • Develop and implement department goals and objectives, fostering a collaborative and client-focused environment.
  • Recruit, hire, and supervise marketing staff, including students, intermittents and contractors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise assigned employees, including providing training, resources and performance evaluations.
  • Manage the daily activities of the department, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Supervises the daily activities of the department, delegating assignments, training and resources necessary to meet performance standards and assist employees in improving performance relevant to job requirements
  • Manage subordinates, including designers, copywriters, PR/marketing specialists, videographers, animators, social media community managers, marketing coordinators, independent contractors and intermittents
