Packaging Design Engineer I

SIGMADESIGN has collaborated with a packaging and crating company seeking an experienced Packaging Design Engineer  to join their facility in San Jose, California. This company has provided innovative and cost-effective design, crating, packaging, and global logistics for over 70 years.

  • Salary: $70,000-72,000

    Primary Function:

    Accountable for supporting internal and external customers crate and packaging design requirements. This includes but is not limited to the accurate collection of information pertaining to customer product, packaging, and packaging requirements. This includes customer site visits for the accurate recording of product or package information to be used during the creation of clear and detailed sketches of products or packaging components, support of in-house packing design and document creation, Cut-sheet or BOM development and creation, as well as updates to existing designs and design documentation, including modifying or supporting the modification of existing sketches and drawings.

    Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

  • Focus on Design and Manufacturing Support for Internal and External customers – 55%

  • Work directly with internal and external customers to create material neutral packaging solutions following company, customer, and known industry specifications and standards to prevent damage to customer product within the known distribution environment

  •  Create new, or update existing designs to optimize manufacturing efficiency and job cost

  • Conduct site visits to collect information specific to a required project

  • Evaluate packaging requirements and provide design solutions based on customer provided inputs (drawings, dimensions, etc)

  • Interpret written instructions, specifications and other inputs to create accurate sketches and other manufacturing documentation

  • Review sketches with customers to confirm that the provided solution meets all requirements prior to releasing design for manufacturing

  • Create and Update Production Documentation – 30%

  • Create new cut-sheets in estimating and production software (CrateMaker) including uploading of sketches and other information needed for the manufacturing process.

  • Update or modify existing cut-sheets, sketches and production documentation as required.

  • Participate in Design Reviews – 15%

  • Participate in internal design reviews to ensure accuracy of sketches and cut-sheets, as well as manufacturability of designs

    Education and Experience: (Knowledge, skills, & abilities)

  • High School or equivalent (GED)

  • One to three years of Packaging Design experience, or BA degree in a packaging related field.

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Basic understanding of standard packaging design and development

  • Knowledge of protective packaging design (Includes crating, foam and corrugated products)

  • General knowledge of clean room acceptable packaging materials

  • Able to design solutions specific to customer requirements.

  • Ability to use tape measure and measure accurately.

  • Ability to communicate clearly in English with Customers, Corporate Staff, Sales, Operations, and Customer service.

  • Able to use a computer and software applications such as but not limited to MS Office Suite, proprietary estimating software.

  • Demonstrate attention to detail, be deadline-driven, with the goal of continuous improvement in skills and abilities.

    Preferred education/knowledge/skill requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering

  • Experience providing design support for crating, corrugated and other protective packaging

  • Understand first article inspection process

  • Experience creating effective packaging design solutions

  • Pass a post offer background check

    Work Environment:

    Standard office environment with normal amounts of office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation.  Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients or suppliers.
