Compass Family Services Program Director, Compass Family Shelter in San Francisco, California

Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

Program: Compass Family Shelter provides homeless families with a safe place to stay. Each family has their own room, and access to a kitchen, children's play area, and other communal spaces. While families are at shelter, they receive intensive support from our team. We help them to stabilize, address challenges impacting their search for housing, and find long-term homes.

Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday

Salary range: $78,000 - $84,000 annually

The opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced Program Director to oversee Compass' 22-room family shelter in the Tenderloin in San Francisco. Ideal candidates will have supervision experience, a deep understanding of harm reduction and trauma-informed care, and a willingness to roll up their sleeves to support staff and clients with the small things (helping a child find a Halloween costume of their favorite character) and the large (designing shelter rules that align with the realities of families' lives).

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Hire, train, supervise and mentor shelter staff.

  • Provide overall leadership and direction to the team, including supporting staff and clients through any and all crises that arise.

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to maintain a safe, supportive environment for residents.

  • Collaborate with community partners and agencies.

  • Work closely with shelter staff and Compass' Impact and Learning team to collect data on activities, evaluate outcomes, and make adjustments as needed to ensure optimal outcomes for families.

  • Track and manage the program budget, ensuring that funds are spent effectively.

  • Prepare reports for funders and work with the development team on grant proposals and renewals.

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory role.

  • At least 4 years of experience in a nonprofit social services or similar setting.

  • Deep understanding of trauma-informed care and the challenges facing homeless families.

  • Knowledge of local resources and support services for homeless families in San Francisco.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with staff, residents, and community partners.

  • Deep commitment to and demonstrated success discussing, integrating, and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging throughout a complex and dynamic organization

  • Major bonus points for: fluent Spanish

  • Major bonus points for: experience working in a residential setting

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $78-84k based on skillset.

  • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation your first year, 5 weeks in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, time off for education, family leave.

  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children.

  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5.

Location & Covid Considerations:

  • Work location: 626 Polk St., in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco

  • After their first 90 days, staff have the option to work from home one day per week

  • Covid vaccination required for all staff
