Compass Family Services Custodian in San Francisco, California

Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

Program: Compass Family Shelter provides families experiencing homelessness with a safe place to stay. Each family has their own room and access to a kitchen, children's play area, and other communal spaces. While families are at shelter, they receive intensive support from our team. We help them stabilize, find housing, and address challenges and barriers.

Schedule: Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 9am-5pm (30 hours per week)

Compensation: $22-$24 per hour plus full benefits (health/dental/vision insurance, paid time off, etc.)

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain cleanliness and basic repair of shelter including community kitchen, dining area, bathroom, children's activity room, basement storage area, supply and food closets and 22 client rooms. This includes sweeping, vacuuming, mopping and buffing floors, removing damaged items from rooms and painting.

  • Coordinate with the Maintenance and Operations Manager with regards to completing/submitting maintenance request forms to THC building management.

  • Prioritize maintenance needs and respond accordingly.

  • Communicate with supervisor or other staff members regarding concerns about clients.

  • Assist staff in providing support to clients and maintain confidentiality.

  • Enforce shelter rules with regards to client behavior.

  • Assist staff with food deliveries and distribution.

  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity and experience with an at-risk population; sensitivity to families' needs

  • Two years experience in maintenance and janitorial work

  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal direct supervision

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $22-24 per hour.

  • Paid time off: just under 4 weeks of vacation your first year, just under 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave, time off for education.

  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.

  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5

  • This is a non-exempt (hourly) position.

Location & Covid Considerations:

  • Work location: 626 Polk St., in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco

  • Covid vaccination required for all staff
