Appointment Type:  Full time, Permanent Exempt appointment (up to 3 years). This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

Our 4,100- acre system includes 25 recreation centers, 9 swimming pools, 5 golf courses and numerous athletic facilities, including sports courts, ball diamonds, soccer fields and gymnasiums. Included in the department’s responsibilities are Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower, the Marina Yacht Harbor, the Palace of Fine Arts, and TPC Harding Park golf course.

About Park Stop Program

The Park Stop Program aims to uphold the Recreation & Parks' high standard of cleanliness for our restrooms in our busiest facilities. By deploying trained personnel to provide a welcoming presence at our restroom facilities, our staff is available to offer information to our park visitors and provide a dedicated staff presence all while ensuring our restrooms are safe, clean, and fully supplied.

The 2718 Custodial Supervisor will provide oversight to the Recreation & Parks' Park Stop Program as part of a workforce development initiative. The incumbent for this position will develop a training plan for staff on relevant custodial tasks that align with the minimum requirements of the 2708 Custodian position and train and evaluate staff according to the establish training plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a Park Stop Program training plan for staff on relevant custodial tasks that align with the minimum requirements of the 2708 Custodian position;

  • Train and evaluate staff according to the established Park Stop Program training plan;

  • Makes field checks of restroom facilities and other assigned areas to maintain standards of work performance and a satisfactory work progress; ensures quality and scope of all completed work; and inspects and secures restroom facilities;

  • Evaluates the performance of subordinate custodial staff; writes performance evaluations; counsels, documents, and initiates and participates in the disciplinary process to enforce departmental and City policies, procedures, and regulations;

  • Develop, update and evaluate work and/or safety standards, policies and procedures by inspecting the quality of custodial services. This includes enforcement of work and/or safety standards, and suggesting alternative methods of cleaning for improvements, and conducting and/or overseeing safety training meetings;

  • Schedule and assign staff to park restroom facilities to ensure staffing needs and day to day operational needs are meet. Monitor staff time, vacation/holiday records, and submits time records;

  • Monitor janitor supply inventory and order supplies as needed;

  • Serve as a contact person for the public and for other departments regarding custodial services;

  • Receives, investigates, and responds to customer complaints regarding custodial servicing;

  • Communicates with staff, clients, vendors, and administrator in person or in writing by preparing and completing a variety of forms, reports, memos and email;

  • Drives motor vehicle to reach various job sites in order to facilitate custodial operations;

  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  1. Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a custodial supervisor (equivalent to City class 2716) responsible for the supervision of a large group of employees engaged in custodial work; AND

  2. Possession of a valid driver's license. NOTE: All appointees will be required to possess and maintain a good driving record.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring:

  • Ability (strong) to participate along-side an assigned custodial crew engaged in performing a variety of cleaning tasks in buildings and surrounding areas at multiple sites;

  • Ability (strong) to participate proactively with other city staff, community members and event organizers, including evenings and weekends, to sustain and build relationships and drive improvements;

  • Ability (strong) to schedule operations of a large crew and provide consistent coverage with fluctuating staffing levels;

  • Ability (basic) and willingness to drive to/from various locations in the City to perform daily responsibilities;

  • Ability (strong) to work effectively in challenging locations and solicit cooperation from park users and community members;

  • Ability (strong) to communicate both orally and in writing with others;

  • Ability (strong) to manage and maintain a positive, professional, productive, efficient, safe, and harmonious working crew;

  • Ability (strong) to maintain custodial supply inventories;

  • Ability (strong) to identify and solve problems in a timely and thoughtful manner;

  • Knowledge (strong) of and hands on experience with custodial best practices;

  • Knowledge (strong) of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.);

  • Experience overseeing the safe use and maintenance of custodial equipment;

  • Experience using power washers, floor scrubbers, back-pack blowers and other custodial equipment; and

  • Experience in disciplinary processes, including counseling, verbal warnings, written warnings, and documentation for and participation in Skelly Hearings.
