Compass Family Services Assistant Program Director, Compass Housing Locator Program in San Francisco, California

Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

About the team: The Housing Locator team empowers San Francisco families to find safe, stable, affordable housing. Families receive help with housing search, money for move-in costs and a portion of the rent, and case management designed to set them up for long term stability and success.

Reports to: Program Director, SF-HOME Housing Location Department

Hours: Full time, Monday-Friday

Compensation: $66K - $75K Annually

What the Assistant Program Director will do:

The Assistant Program Director of the Housing Location Department is responsible for directly supervising staff, overseeing programs, ensuring compliance with contracts, and supporting the Program Director in managing the Housing Location team.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Directly supervise a team of Housing Locators responsible for helping families approved for rental assistance move into housing. This team builds relationships with private market landlords, supports families in searching and applying for units, ensures units meet program requirements, and supports families in leasing up and moving in.

  • Ensure all leased units meets program requirements, including Housing Quality Standard inspections, rental max calculations, and utility allowance calculations by reviewing each unit identified by Housing Locators and approving only eligible units for lease-up

  • Approve and facilitate check requests from Housing Locators to ensure landlords are paid for lease-up costs in a timely manner

  • Ensure each family leases up within the required housing search timeline and that families needing additional time request extensions appropriately

  • Coordinate with the Program Directors and Assistant Program Directors of other SF-HOME divisions, including C-HOME and C-CARES, to ensure that Housing Locators and Case Management staff work together to support families during housing search

  • Ensure excellent data quality standards and record keeping

  • Track and report outcomes for the program, and prepare grant and contract applications.

  • Develop relationships with funders and other key stakeholders. Attend relevant meetings to represent Compass' interests.

  • Collaborate with the Housing Location Program Director on staff hiring.

  • Function as acting Program Director during the Program Director's vacation and sick leave.

The Assistant Program Director should have these skills:

  • At least 2 years of experience in social services working with homeless individuals, or those at risk of homelessness

  • At least 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience, including proven ability to oversee major projects or programs, track multiple work streams, and oversee the work of others.

  • Experience with successful program implementation and design

  • Excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills

  • Outstanding work habits: punctual, reliable, cooperative, team-oriented

  • Excellent writing and organizational skills

  • Strong attention to detail is critical for success in this position.

  • Ability to assess and de-escalate potentially volatile situations.

  • Ability to work effectively with culturally-diverse staff, families and communities.

  • Ability to work independently, while being part of a team.

  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Suite of Programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.)

  • Experience in real estate or housing preferred

  • Valid CA driver's license and ability to be approved as a Zipcar driver required

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $66-75k annually

  • Paid time off: just under 4 weeks of vacation your first year, just under 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.

  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.

  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5.

Location and Covid safety:

  • Fully in-person, either at our office at 37 Grove St. or in the community.

  • Covid vaccination required for all staff.
