BAE Systems, one of the world s leading defense contractors, is seeking an experiencedSenior Safety, Health, and Environment (SH&E) Managerfor their facility in San Diego, CA as part of its Ship Repair business. Under direction of the business SH&E Director, the SH&E Manager is responsible for integrating SH&E into the operations of the shipyard. The SH&E Manager will provide strategy and leadership, ensuring shipyard compliance with regulatory and company standards, implementing SH&E directives, mentoring site SH&E staff, improving performance, and ensuring SH&E policies and procedures align with governmental regulations and corporate policies. The ideal candidate would be equally as strong in all disciplines Safety, Health, and Environment with a sufficient knowledge of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plans, develops, and implements SH&E processes to ensure compliance with company and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintains and improves SH&E management systems (ISO 14001 / ISO 45001).

  • Establishes and maintains a close working relationship with operational leadership; engages in operations planning processes to ensure that SH&E considerations are proactively incorporated into operations (management of change).

  • Ensures that OSHA Recordkeeping and other SH&E records are maintained appropriately and that all mandatory SH&E compliance reporting is done in a timely manner.

  • In conjunction with site operating leaders, establishes goals, targets, and action plans to ensure continual improvement and routinely monitors progress against plans.

  • Works with stakeholders to lead and coordinate investigations in response to incidents and ensure that corrective and preventative measures are taken in a timely manner.

  • Participates on various Site, Business, and Sector-wide teams as both a subject matter expert as well as a representative for the Business.

  • Analyzes and interprets SH&E incident data to identify trends and formulate plans and strategies to address priority SH&E issues.

  • Coordinates and/or conducts various Industrial Hygiene & Occupational Health (IH/OH) programs required at the site trained to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and recommend controls for environmental and physical hazards and stressors.

  • Ensures that systems are in place to comply with corporate SH&E reporting requirements.

  • Coordinates and directs environmental activities, functions, and standards, including all required environmental records, reports, and permit applications across all media (e.g. water, solid waste, air, etc.)

  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with regulators and other external stakeholders.

  • Manages a team of Safety, Health, and Environment professionals including a safety supervisor, safety technicians, competent persons, environmental technicians, and SH&E administrators.

  • Develops employees and performs all duties associated with supervision such as hiring, training, evaluating, counseling, and discipline.

  • Develops and tracks annual budgets.

  • Ability to be agile and have a sense of urgency as a shipyard environment is dynamic with many entities working together all with a common goal in mind.

*Position is eligible for a $10,000 signing bonus.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Typically requires a Bachelor s degree in a related discipline plus ten (10) years of work experience in an industrial environment.

  • Thorough knowledge of SH&E regulatory requirements and industry standards.

  • Solid understanding of a Management System (ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and/or ISO 9001).

  • Ability to interpret and apply domestic environmental regulations.

  • Substantial experience with occupational hazard identification, related risk assessment, and determination of proper controls.

  • Experience and education on investigation techniques and determining root causes and corrective actions.

  • Able to cultivate a positive SH&E culture to achieve world class performance while maintaining a professional attitude.

  • Demonstrated success leading improvements in SH&E in an industrial environment.

  • Ability to establish and foster an environment that encourages initiative, creative thinking, collaborative action, and process improvement.

  • Able to successfully interface with all regulatory agencies of the business unit.

  • Ability to work effectively on cross functional and business-wide teams.

  • Leadership experience and managing diverse teams. Experience supervising technicians, contractors, and internal employees as well as influencing others without formal authority.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills (English).

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from non-technical stakeholders.

  • Strong computer skills and ability to apply statistical and other analytic techniques.

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

  • Time management skills and ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Must be able to support at the shipyard site, in-person, Monday through Friday, with the ability to promptly respond for emergencies/urgent matters outside schedule as needed.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Advanced technical degree with a core curriculum in an environmental field or environmental credential, such as Professional Engineer, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager and Certified Environmental Professional.

  • Direct involvement in CAA, CWA, SPCC, RCRA, and CERCLA programs.

  • Advanced education in applying industrial hygiene principals to industrial operations such as a Certified Industrial Hygienist.

  • Experience working in the shipyard industry.

  • Experience reading and interpreting NAVSEA standard items and other government contract related requirements.

  • Knowledge of Serious Injury and Fatality programs.

  • TapRoot knowledge and/ or training.

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $140690 - $239140

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
