General Atomics Materials Modeling Engineering Intern in San Diego, California

We have an exciting opportunity for a graduate Intern to join our Nuclear Technologies and Materials Group (NTM) team in Rancho Bernardo, California!

As a Materials Modeling Engineering Intern with the NTM Group, you will have the opportunity to work closely with a team of experts in the field of nuclear technologies and ceramic composite materials research. You will support and contribute to innovative projects aimed at developing cutting-edge solutions for clean energy, advanced nuclear reactors, and ceramic materials that play a vital role in ensuring the safety and reliability of nuclear system.

This position is available for graduate or doctoral students to participate in supervised practical training in a professional technical field, such as Computer Sciences, including Software Development/Engineering, Information Technology, Manufacturing, etc. Assists in the completion of non-routine and advanced tasks; assists in the analysis, investigation and solution of complex problems; and assists in developing electronic and hard copy documentation as required. Under limited supervision, working on non-routine and advanced projects with general instructions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to work on advanced materials modelling, processing and development. Work will focus on material modeling. Familiarity with finite element analysis, finite element modeling, ABAQUS, ANSYS, SolidWorks or similar is strongly desired

  • Research Support: Assist in planning, constructing, and conducting experiments, literature reviews, and data analysis.

  • Materials Testing: Participate in the testing and characterization of ceramic materials, including mechanical testing, and microstructural analysis.

  • Analysis: Analyze experimental data and contribute to the interpretation of results, applying knowledge and education as well as working with software tools as needed.

  • Documentation: Maintain detailed and accurate records of experimental procedures, data, and outcomes.

  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, providing assistance and input in research projects while able to work independently when as needed.

  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment in accordance with applicable regulations. Observe all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.

  • Participates in the day to day activities of assigned functional area assisting in the completion of advanced tasks.

  • Assists in applying knowledge to analyze, investigate and resolve complex problems.

  • Assists in developing electronic and hard copy reports, records, diagrams and charts.

  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.

  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires enrollment as a graduate or doctoral student at a recognized college or university.

  • Currently pursuing a degree in materials science / engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong academic background in relevant coursework and an eagerness to learn; approach tasks with a positive “can-do” or “can find out” attitude.

  • Demonstrate excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; understand new concepts and apply them effectively and accurately.

  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities are a must, coupled with basic computer skills.

  • Detail-oriented, with a commitment to safety in office and laboratory environments.

  • Proficient in following general and detailed instructions, along with organizational policies and procedures.

  • Lab experience, class work or experience with materials and material processing, interests in ceramics is a plus.

  • Ability to understand new concepts and apply them accurately.

  • Ability to follow general instructions as well as organizational policies and procedures.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to enable an effective interface with internal professionals.

  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.

  • Strong computer skills.

This position pays at an hourly rate of $37.00.
