Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We are seeking an Airframe and Special Projects Supervisor in our Poway location. This position will report to the Aircraft and Special Projects Design Manager. This person will lead a design team of approximately 3-7 engineers to develop and validate aircraft and special projects structures in a rapid paced environment. This team will develop aircraft, airframes, airframe retro-fits, internal and external payloads (Pods/Pylons). The Supervisor will create and support high quality, low cost designs using concise documentation while ensuring compliance with engineering principles and group procedures and company standards.

Strategic Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implement of departmental vision and strategies to drive employee engagement

  • Manage products and associated product champions

  • Balance process compliance against innovation

  • Own department products and/or process/metrics and associated strategies

  • Identify, develop, and manage product champions

  • Perform as a Product Champion and/or overall strategic development of dept processes/metrics

  • Partner with Product team to build/maintain technical breadth and depth of department


  • Assist manager with tactical execution of all department activities including managing, mentoring, developing, and training.

  • Partner with programs to drive affordability, first time quality and cost competitiveness for all department products and indirect activities

  • Drive continuous process improvement and usage of common processes by department members across programs, as appropriate; influence use of existing/common tools and processes

  • Create/Review proposals, ensuring a balanced execution/risk posture given affordability/competitiveness objectives

  • Prepare/attend reviews and ensure dept products are meeting program technical, process, product, and staffing needs. Ensure design compliance with organizational policies/procedures

Staffing & Employee Development:

  • Development, training and retention of top talent

  • Provide leadership and guidance to section manager hiring decisions; personally responsible for hiring direct reports

  • Work with Manager to define consistent performance expectations/assessment factors and compensation strategy that contribute to the development of a high performance culture

  • Engage section managers in the execution of performance management and compensation strategy to ensure consistency across department

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; twelve or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree, ten or more years of experience with a master's degree, or seven or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education

  • Demonstrates a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.

  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment

  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals; the capability of representing the organization as a prime technical contact; and, the ability to provide leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals

  • Customer focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems

  • Knowledge and/or application of specifications used in the certification of aircraft (JSSG, FAR25, FAR23, STANAG, NAVAIR)

  • Experience with Pro/Engineer (Creo) or other parametric CAD tool (CATIA V5, Unigraphics NX, Solidworks)

  • Experience with Windchill or other PDM Systems (Enovia, Smarteam, Teamcenter)

  • Experience with Microsoft Project and Excel

  • Experience with Design, stress analysis, tooling design, or manufacturing of primary composite structures or airframes

  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment

  • Must be a U.S Citizen and able to obtain and maintain DoD Security Clearance
