Job Summary

The Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute ( SCI ) at the University of Utah is a multi-disciplinary research group that brings together researchers and students to collaborate on developing cutting-edge data visualization, scientific computing, data management and analytics, and image analysis solutions and apply them to a broad range of science and engineering domains. The SCI IT group provides a wide range of computing services to the institute, including personal computing machines (laptops/desktops/servers), IT infrastructure (networking, web, email, storage etc.), highperformance computing clusters, as well as fostering collaboration with other HPC groups across the world.

Responsibilities

This position, reporting to the Director of IT, is focused on end-user and service support,

including but not limited to:

  • Install, configure, and maintain laptop and desktop systems

  • Provide system performance optimization and troubleshoot/remedy issues

  • Administer cloud resources, such as computational or infrastructure resources

  • Ensure connectivity and configuration across our internal networks

  • Write and maintain technical documentation

  • Work with senior staff on larger projects (architecture, administration, etc.)

  • Provide guidance for junior system administrators

This is not a remote position, though hybrid work can be done where in-person

interaction with the users is not required.

Minimum Qualifications

Require a bachelor’s degree in a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), and 3-5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Preferences

Department-specific preferences:

  • BS/MS in Information Science, Computer Science/Engineering, or similar degree

  • At least 5 years of experience in system administration and information technologies supporting Linux/Windows/Mac systems (software and hardware)

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to work independently as well as a part of a team

  • Experience working with virtual environments (e.g. VMware, Proxmox, etc.)

  • Familiarity with programming/automation languages and frameworks (e.g. shell/python/perl, Ansible/Chef/Puppet, etc.)

  • Familiarity with enterprise software and solutions for managing large userbases and system counts (e.g. Active Directory, LDAP , InTune, ticketing systems, monitoring tools, databases (MySQL/Postgres), NFS / CIFS etc.)

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience working in an academic research environment

  • Familiarity with software development practices ( GIT , CI/CD, IAAS , etc.)

  • Experience with HPC systems (GPUs, Slurm, OnDemand, Jupyter notebooks,

  • etc.)

  • Knowledge of networking systems architecture such as VLANs, CIDR blocks,

  • routing, DNS / DHCP , VPNs, etc.

  • Familiarity with web stacks (back and front ends) and monitoring/graphing

  • Solutions (e.g. Prometheus/Grafana)
