Job Summary

This position provides assistive care to patients of the RedMed Clinic in the A. Ray Olpin Student Union Building on campus. The certified employee facilitates the efficient delivery of patient care, supports the professional role of the licensed staff, and provides support and assistance as directed by licensed staff in rendering basic healthcare to the patient. This position also assists with clerical functions as a multi-skilled auxiliary worker. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritizes and responds to and/or forwards messages of patient inquiries; including answering telephone calls, checking voicemail, answering emails, and EMR patient messages. Schedules appointments, procedures, and diagnostic testing.

  • Assists in routine clerical functions such as accurately filing of medical information in patient’s records in EPIC , locating and compiling department charts, and obtaining medical records from other providers while ensuring patient confidentiality.

  • Assists in required documentation specific to worker’s compensation visits (e.g. 122 and 123 forms).

  • Conducts occupational health services including mask fit testing and occupational hearing tests, ensuring compliance with OSHA and departmental regulatory standards.

  • Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures such as collecting vital signs, patient histories, and reason for appointment(s).

  • Reports all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member.

  • Performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments ( CLIA ) Waved Lab tests as identified by department and reports results to the appropriate personnel. Demonstrates phlebotomy skills in accordance with clinic procedures and physician orders.

  • Performs autoclave maintenance and cleaning of sterile equipment.

  • Performs additional skills such as suture removal and injections (IM, Subq and intra-dermal).

  • Acts as a chaperone during patient examinations, ensuring a professional and supportive environment that prioritizes patient comfort, respect, confidentiality, and privacy.

  • Monitors and cleans assigned patient examination rooms per University of Utah Health policy, unit areas, and unit equipment; reporting outdated supplies, stock levels, and restock set levels of items and necessary equipment repairs.

  • Participates in and completes mandatory training sessions covering infection prevention and control, safety protocols, CPR , equipment operation, and procedures in accordance with the department’s guidelines.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the department.

  • Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the specific clinic’s specialty skills within six weeks of hire. *Specialty skills may not be performed until after the new hire completes basic competency testing.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

One of the following

Current Advanced EMT certification with the State of Utah.

Current certification to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Utah.

Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant ( CMA ) through AAMA

Currently credentialed in ABR -OE (Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry) through AAMA .

Current certification as a Registered Medical Assistant ( RMA ) through AMT

Current certification as a National Certified Medical Assistant ( NCMA ) through NCCT .

Current Clinical Medical Assistant Certification through NHA .

Current certification as a NRCMA – Medical Assistant through the National Association for Health Professionals.

Or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

If candidate is not certified upon hire, they must have completed an accredited Medical Assisting program before date of hire.

One of the indicated certifications must be obtained within six months of hire.
