University of Utah Graduate Research Assistant (RA) in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

Inequities are embedded within the institutions and systems that shape access to housing, education, healthcare, and other resources needed for well-being in the United States. One such system of interrelated institutions is work: a near-universal experience often seen as an unchangeable reality dominated by actors so powerful that they dictate where and how we live, what we can achieve, and what progress we can make as a society. The Utah Center for Promotion of Work Equity Research (U-POWER) is a research and outreach center that challenges that belief. At U-POWER, we are dedicated to promoting the idea that decent workwork that pays a living wage, that supports our personal growth and the needs of our families and communities, and that allows us to protest injustices and organize towards a better futureis not only necessary but possible to achieve in our lifetimes. For the past fifty years, research and practice on working conditions has sought to limit exposure to hazardous circumstances in dirty, dangerous, and demeaning jobs, many of which are essential to the functioning of our society. While occupational fatalities and injuries have dropped dramatically across the US, work is also implicated in the development and evolution of multiple chronic diseases. Furthermore, in recent decades, changes in labor markets and societies have prompted additional consideration of how work interacts with health, which has expanded researcher attention to include the employee-employer relationship and the employment conditions established with that relationship as health influences. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic forcibly illuminated how pervasive and influential a variety of work inequities are, and how far we have to go to ensure that all work, from jobs that are undervalued through those that are prestigious, is decent. We are seeking a graduate research assistant (doctoral-level) to help us characterize the way that occupational health research has evolved since the struggle to reduce fatalities at work to the growing awareness of the influence of social, political, economic, and ideological conditions in shaping who has access to safe and healthy work. The RA will assist with conducting a scoping literature review that will include both qualitative and bibliometric analyses of the data. Prior knowledge of occupational health and scoping literature reviews is welcome but not necessary and we encourage applications from individuals who are willing to learn to engage with theories, concepts, and research outside of their home discipline. The RA will be a partner or leader across all stages of the project, and we will provide both initial training at the onset as well as additional training in an iterative fashion as needed across phases of the project. Please note that is a grant-funded position and is contingent upon continued funding.
