MT OLYMPUS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT GIS Technician in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

GENERAL PURPOSE

Create, update and maintain geographic information system (GIS) data in the desktop and online environment.  Create and maintain ArcGIS Pro webmaps, apps to support online mapping for data sharing and mobile data collection.  Provide GIS support for other departments. Create, update and maintain digital information in AutoCAD.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the District Engineer.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Provides general support to system users while in training or on a project-by-project basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintains GIS data, features and database applications; assists in the development and review of logical database file designs; query GIS data and display results using maps, graphs and tabular data; scans and digitizes as-built data into GIS and AutoCAD 3D systems; prepares GIS data for use in digital presentations; print and plot large maps for display purposes; interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as other District departments, developers, engineers, contractors, other government entities, regulatory personnel, customers, and the general public.

Receives and records District operations and field data; enters field reports, plan and profile drawings and house sheet information; verifies accuracy and examines data and makes comparisons to identify inconsistencies.  May assist in system flow modeling and entering flow data into the District's EPA SWMM model.

Utilizes ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software to review and verify the accuracy of various computerized maps and engineering drawings; conducts field exercises utilizing GPS equipment to pinpoint coordinates and measurements for various District infrastructure; may perform general field survey duties as needed.

Digitizes existing and new additions to collections, engineering or planning facilities; produces custom maps upon request from the public and district officials; utilizes various mapping and cartography skills to finalize computerized and hard copy maps

Researches records of plats and property descriptions to determine property location, boundaries and size; digitizes appropriate changes or additions to existing maps; Imports and assembles GPS data received from the engineering department, local survey, county data, external utilities, state and federal agencies; links data and documents to the GIS system.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.                Education and Experience

                   Minimum:

        &nb sp;          A.             High School diploma,

AND

                   B.             One (1) year of work experience directly related to GIS data systems or data entry,

Preferred:

A.       Graduation from college with as Associate's degree in GIS or related field

 

2.             Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

*                 Thorough knowledge of* GIS workstation hardware, software and peripherals in a computer network environment, specifically ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD, and AutoCAD Civil 3D; knowledge of computer graphics; knowledge of GIS principles and practices; able to edit and create GIS spatial and attribute data; Create production quality maps at various scales as needed; import and display AutoCAD data within the GIS system; rectify raster data into GIS; Must understand State Plane Coordinate Systems(NAD 27 and NAD 83);  Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

*           Ability to* manage complex computer system operations; read and understand computer printouts; recognize and solve problems related to data entry and retrieval; develop effective working relationships with supervisors, elected officials, subordinates and fellow employees; must be detail oriented and able to prioritize tasks on a daily bases.

3.            Special Qualifications:

                               May be requir d to become cross-trained in line maintenance or other special functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 Tasks require a variety of physical activities, periodically involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, and reaching. Talking, hearing and seeing essential to performance of essential duties. Muscular strength of arms, hands, back and legs necessary in lifting boxes of print materials, computer components, and relocating terminal cables.  Duties are generally performed indoors under controlled climatic conditions. Mental application requires emotional stability in dealing with time deadlines and stresses of emergency response needs. May be subject to exposure to wastewater and pathogens such as typhoid, paratyphoid, dysentery, polio, tetanus, etc.  Moderate stress associated with high public contact and deadline demands.  Mental application requires discriminating thinking, guided and creative pr oblem-solving.
