Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Sr. Principal Systems Engineer - Safety to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in St. Augustine, FL .

The successful candidate will participate in a collaborative environment and support analysis of hardware/ software integration of safety critical aircraft systems. You will apply engineering principles to optimize all aspects of safety to increase the operational effectiveness throughout the lifecycle of the system. The position will afford the opportunity to interact with vendors and OEM suppliers to investigate and integrate third party safety systems into an operational aircraft environment. In addition, you will provide expert advice and guidance to team members and valued customers regarding specific technical aspects of systems or concept development.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Applies knowledge, methodologies, and principles of safety engineering as defined in MIL-STD-882E

  • Reviews product systems, associated support equipment and facilities, functional specifications and operations, and establishes safety requirements for assigned systems

  • Independently analyzes and recommends safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards

  • Develops and evaluates systems, associated support equipment and facilities, networks and information systems to ensure designs meet applicable safety specifications and standards

  • Applies engineering principles to investigate, analyze, plan, design, test, or evaluate military weapons systems

  • Reviews and prepares engineering and technical analyses, reports, change proposals, and other technical documentation for system safety and in support of Airworthiness Certification IAW MIL-HDBK-516

  • Reviews architecture, requirements, and interface artifacts for safety on complex hardware/ software systems

  • Reviews Test Plans and Procedures for safety requirements verification and potential hazardous operations

This position is contingent upon verification of DoD clearance.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 9 years of professional/military experience OR Master of Science Degree in a STEM discipline with 7 years of professional/military experience OR PhD in a STEM discipline with 4 years of professional/military experience.

  • An active DoD Secret clearance or higher (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation)

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience applying System Safety or Software Safety in a defense or commercial environment

  • Working knowledge in system safety processes (MIL-STD-882E, ARP4671) and related software assurance processes (Joint Services Software Safety (JSSSEH), DO-178C/DO-254),

  • Working knowledge in airworthiness processes (MIL-HDBK-516C)

  • Working knowledge in software coding languages

  • Experience in military aviation

Salary Range: $114,900 - $172,300

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
