Job Description

This position performs heavy equipment repair and maintenance on MDOT vehicles and equipment at the Saginaw East Garage as directed. Periodic repairs in the field are required as well. This position performs a full range of maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance activities on light and heavy equipment and prepares work orders and cost/materials estimates using computerized programs. The employee uses considerable independent judgment in making decisions. This position may require travel with overnight stay.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry 8 level through the maximum rate at the experienced E10 level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Two years of experience assisting skilled trades people in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic E10

Four years of experience assisting skilled trades people in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, including two years equivalent to a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 9.

Alternate Education and Experience

Possession of an associate degree in Heavy Duty Truck/Heavy Equipment Repair may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Completion of 12 semester (18 term) credits in one or more of the following coursework areas: heavy duty truck, heavy equipment repair, diesel engines, math, or physics may be substituted for one year of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of automobiles may be substituted for one year of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

  • Possession of a Commercial Learner’s Permit upon appointment to the position. Continuing employment requires possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire into the position.

Paid Parental Leave:Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leaveimmediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.

Paid Holidays:Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.
