The Designer II Men’s drives the aesthetic vision for the assigned category and is accountable for determining style, material, and color directions based on input from the design manager, Creative Director of design, category manager(s), technical design, sales/marketing, and manufacturing teams. The candidate stays up to date with fashion trends and consumer needs, and supports the integrity of the lines/brands and the goals of the company. The position produces design sketches and makes seasonal presentations of product designs. The Designer II Men’s lifestyle reviews all styles for construction, silhouette, fit and trim details, and approves quality of factory samples.

Essential Duties:

  • Responsible for the execution of design creations, driving execution of designs across multiple categories and brands, partnering with the Sr Design Manager on creative direction and designing apparel that is appealing and brand appropriate for the target consumer.

  • Works with sales, marketing, and brand ambassadors to identify opportunities to meet or build consumer demand for each brands’ products, to improve market share through new fabric, construction and product concepts, and to develop seasonal strategies.

  • Must be able to multi task to meet deadlines in multiple seasons progressing at the same time.

  • Develops new product concepts and innovative fabrication and construction technologies. Collaborates with category manager(s), raw materials team, mills/technology companies, other designers, technical designers, sourcing and to explore next generation products

  • Using the product briefs provided by category managers the Designer finds solutions to functional and design problems to achieve the product brief goals.Creates design concepts and sketches that reflect these goals and solutions. Translates ideas into computer (CAD or Illustrator), based on feedback from concept meetings. Work within cost and manufacturing limitations.

  • Assists in developing sales strategies and stories for product based on unique innovation, sellable features that will enhance marketing of the product.

  • Adds color to the design, selecting the appropriate colors from available palettes.

  • Produces design spec package for each project.Working closely with technical designers, review samples and direct revisions as needed throughout the development cycle.

  • Assists with fabric and trims selection and development.

  • Researches global marketplace and interprets consumer and market needs as they relate to the respective product category. This includes researching fabric, color, and design concepts, then collecting feedback from customers and brand ambassadors.Attends selected trade shows for market research and attends sales meetings to gain thorough understanding of customer/product requirements.

  • Accurately determines, anticipates and validates future trends, technologies and cultural drivers to expand and grow the assortment across all categories.

  • Drives innovation and technology into commercially viable product within the parameters of the Brand strategy.

  • Accurately assesses the overall competitive market landscape to design brand appropriate apparel that reflects an understanding of the target consumer.

  • Accountable for driving the business by building profitable, market right, consumer product that is in line with the department and company financial targets.

  • Ensures product design execution is within target costs and margin requirements.

  • Actively manages professional development.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • University or four-year college degree in apparel/fashion design or equivalent experience.

  • A minimum of 2-5 years of professional experience designing apparel in the outdoor, active wear or sportswear industries.

  • High degree of proficiency in Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign using a Mac computer.

  • PLM knowledge is a plus.

  • Intermediate knowledge of technical and design needs to build exceptional product focused on fabric, fit and margin.

  • Practical knowledge of other functions such as sourcing, production, sales, marketing and merchandising preferred.

  • Intermediate industry and consumer trend knowledge in the outdoor industry.

  • Experience working with factories and product development teams, developing fabric, technology and construction innovation.

  • Ability to effectively work with department executives, suppliers, technical designers, and manufacturers to identify and develop new product concepts, innovations and construction technologies.

  • Proactive and passionate approach to driving fresh, innovative thinking from product concept to final execution.

  • Able to manage and lead change.

  • Able to guide/collaborate among cross-functional teams to achieve business goals.

  • Presentation/speaking skills – able to present and sell to all levels of the organization as well as the customer, communicating a clear and inspiring vision.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Salary Band: $85-100k
