Position Summary:

The Principal Design Engineer is recognized as a technical expert with impact on company and/or major projects, and is a key technology contributor. This person conceives state-of-the-art and innovative equipment designs to solve significant processing problems. Functions as a leader to engineer equipment and improved processes. Conceives/applies state of the industry solutions to projects or product applications. Has made a major contribution to the introduction of a new product, process, or application resulting in significant increase in sales, or cost savings.

Specific Job Duties :

  • Effectively interfaces with various internal and external groups during the development cycle of B+L’s core products to evaluate and execute alternative solutions to technical problems covering a variety of situations.

  • Facilitate internal resources and outside vendors in developing technical solutions for primary and secondary automated equipment used in the production and measurement of contact lenses, and medical devices.

  • Responsible for the transfer of moderately large, complex, or high impact projects to production.

  • Expert in primary function with complete understanding of related areas/functions i.e. molding, oxygen management, automation, casting, solvent reduction, extraction, dispensing, heat sealing, design for manufacturability, DFSS etc.

  • Responsible for producing 5 or more important contributions to characterization, measurement or engineering. These include documented, demonstrated and/or published materials, or processes, product innovations/Record of Inventions (ROI’s) and peer review lectures.

  • Lead internal and external design reviews and be proficient in 3D SolidWorks CAD design

  • Deliver Technical package / documentation / specs that meet customer requirements.

Qualifications and experience:

  • BS with a minimum of 10 years relevant experience in Engineering, Process Development, MS with a minimum of 6 years relevant experience, or PhD/OD/MD, with min. of 4 years experience.

  • Hands-on experience and technical expertise in a development environment a must. ISO, FDA, medical device manufacturing experience from ideation through commercialization a plus. Demonstrated Leadership and ability to drive innovation, budgets, teams and risk based decision processes.

  • Special Skills: Computer literate proficient in 3D SolidWorks CAD design. Experience in high volume low cost manufacturing systems development desired. Experience with process automation integration of PLC controlled machines a plus. Knowledge of SPC, DOE and statistical analysis a plus. Experience with medical device and clean room environment. Use and knowledge of Lean and DFSS tools desired.

  • Specialized Training: ISO-13485, GMP, medical device manufacturing experience, GD&T

As required by New York State's pay transparency bill, Bausch + Lomb provides a good faith minimum and maximum salary range of compensation for roles that can or will be performed, in New York State. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific office location. For New York State, the range of starting annual base pay for this role is $101,000 - $155,000.
