Compensation Range:

$17.43 - $24.40

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Reviews reports on diseases and surgery and codes in accordance with acceptable classifications; prepares statistical reports; maintains indexes and related files.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:

Under the direction of department manager or other designated authority.

Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

Interview new parents to obtain information required to complete a Birth Certificate for each infant born at Strong Memorial Hospital. Explaining various forms and obtaining required signatures.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:

Responsible for monitoring own performance on assigned tasks. Self-directed and must make complex decisions independently. May assist in training other support staff.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard office equipment, including but not limited to: telephone, page system, personal computer, printer, photo copier, fax, EPIC, Outlook, scanner and third-party verification systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Preparing interview forms and visiting new parents - 40%:

  • Be sensitive to difficult situations

  • Deliver clear and accurate instructions to parents

  • Be aware of and follow NYS DOH guidelines in obtaining parent information

Chart Abstractions - 25%:

  • Review medical records for both the mother and newborn to obtain required data

  • Follow NYS DOH guidelines in obtaining medical information

  • Follow established HIPPA guidelines

Data Base Entry - 25%:

  • Enter data obtained from parents and from chart abstractions into the NYS Perinatal Data System

  • Accuracy is critical

Miscellaneous - 10%:

  • Weekend coverage (4 hours) and Holiday coverage to be rotated equally among staff

  • Answering numerous phone calls from new parents regarding birth certificates and Social Security Numbers

  • Routine filing and copying of forms, letters, etc

  • Proficient at Excel, Word and able to multi-task

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 years of post High School courses with emphasis in Data Processing or Medical Terminology

  • Accreditation as Medical Record Technician

  • 1-2 years related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
