University of Rochester Lab Animal Lab Technician III in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Provide exemplary customer service and animal acquisition procedures with a priority meeting University policy, Federal and NIH compliance requirements, UCAR, NIH OLAW and AAALAC, International. Provide technical assistance to supervisors, investigators and veterinary staff. Utilize knowledge of biosecurity, aseptic technique, normal behavior and biology of laboratory rodents to manage breeding programs and collect samples for genotyping of breeding colonies of researchers’ SPF mice.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct rodent colony management practices for researchers at least twice per week per colony. Identify and employ appropriate breeding schemes to optimize progeny based on strain complexity, scientific need and strain based reproductive capabilities. Accurately sex neonatal rodents and weanlings. Wean rodents at appropriate interval based on age, size and following IACUC policies. Individually identify rodents using IACUC approved methods including toe snip, ear punch, ear tags and tattoo. Obtain tissue samples for genetic characterization of mice and rats by performing tail biopsies, ear biopsies and blood collection. Organize detailed breeding records and general inventories of genetically altered rodent colonies using DCM databases. Troubleshoot breeding insufficiencies in consultation with the researcher, supervisor and DCM Veterinarians.

  • Responsible for census management by collecting animal room census data and barcodes. Processing barcodes in an Oracle database.

  • Responsible for timely and cost-effective purchases of all animal orders for the Animal Resource compliant with Animal Welfare Act Federal, New York State DOH, NIH, AAALAC and IACUC requirements. Create and administer purchases in the accordance with university procurement systems, policies and procedures. Generate cage cards and departmental delivery reports. Inspect animals upon receipt.

  • General office duties to provide customer service which include answering phones, in-person questions and processing forms.

Other projects and job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree required.

  • 4 years of specialized experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • General experience with animals in a work environment or a research environment required.

  • Ability to handle and restrain animals for the purpose of assisting animal health and research staff required.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science upon hire preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $19.96 - $27.94 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
