Cornell Cooperative Extension Garden Outreach Educator - Rochester, NY in Rochester, New York

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County has an opening for a full-time Garden Outrach Educator working from the Rochester NY office.

The Educator will serve as a member of the Horticulture team to assist with implementation and evaluation of gardening educational programs and activities. Educator will be responsible for promoting program objectives and plans in all areas of garden outreach programming with emphasis on urban outreach, life skills and workforce preparation, community service and leadership within the urban environment. Programming and program activities will focus on both general work skills and vegetable production, including, but not limited to gardening training, community gardening, delivering gardening training in both classroom and in the garden setting to support the Gaining Relevant and Outstanding Work Skills (GROWS) workforce development program as well as other outlets.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Master’s degree or Equivalent Education. (Bachelor’s degree plus 4 yrs transferrable program/functional experience may substitute).• Experience relevant to the role of the position.• Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in English.• Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.• Proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.• Experience, ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.• Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community, and professional leaders.• Ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and tactfully through verbal, written and electronic methods. • Ability and willingness to work with a high degree of integrity, accuracy, organization, sound professional judgment, and the ability to handle confidential, sensitive information.• Ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts.• Ability to organize, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks, deadlines, requirements, and priorities to complete work in a timely manner and within established deadlines.• Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively with advisory boards and committees, community, and funding partners.• Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate informal educational programs. • Ability to work in a typical office environment which may include lifting, moving, and/or transporting office supplies, work related materials, and equipment with or without accommodation. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Coursework in Education, Agriculture, Plant Science, and/or Horticulture.• Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.• Experience collaborating with urban organizations.• Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in Spanish.• Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.• Ability to present effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences in group settings. • Experience in guiding and collaborating with volunteers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Program Development - 15%• Assist Supervisor with development of gardening educational programs with emphasis on meeting the identified needs and diverse interests of urban participants.• Assist Supervisor in research, identification, selection, and creation of gardening education program materials to address identified needs.• Assist Supervisor in making programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes and to meet changing local priorities.• Assist Supervisor in structuring programs to meet the needs of diverse program participants.

Program Delivery - 50%• Deliver high quality educational programs and events that address local, regional, and statewide initiatives relative to Harvest NY garden outreach.• Deliver high quality educational programs and activities with a focus on addressing participant needs, including, but not limited to gardening training, soft work skills mentoring, and identifying barriers to employment and developing strategies to overcome these barriers.• Oversee production of the South Lawn Project (SLP) Educational Farm, including bed prep, plantings seeds and seedlings, maintaining vegetable beds, harvesting, and prepping produce for delivery to local food pantries, work with Master Gardeners on display gardens and other tasks as required. • Utilize a variety of educational methods which may include direct teaching, group experiences, media, newsletters, electronic technology, internet, and distance learning to deliver program.• Occasionally apply existing subject matter knowledge and utilize existing research-based curriculum to create lessons plans to deliver educational program. • Serve as subject matter resource utilizing existing subject matter resources and materials.• Provide educational program efforts via mass media including contributing articles to the CCE newsletter utilizing emails, phone messages, and website postings. • Interact with program participants representing CCE in a professional manner at all times.• Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant Universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.

Program Evaluation - 5%• Assist in the creation of program evaluation framework. • Interact with program participants, schools, association staff, program committees, county/community leaders, and other key stakeholders as identified to collect evaluation data. • Assist in analyzing collected program evaluation data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure, and methods.• Communicate evaluation results and findings.• Assist in recommending program changes to strengthen and improve programs.

Administrative Direction - 10%• Assist with establishing program goals and priorities that align with Association and statewide Plan of Work.• Assist with planning the delivery of established educational program goals.• Assist with identifying key relationships to build/sustain with community leaders and stakeholders.• Assist with identifying program, activity, and resource needs necessary to implement initiatives and projects.• May provide input to planning budget based on program feasibility needs and assist in identifying opportunities for horticulture and workforce fund development activities.• Assist with development of grant ideas, programs and narrative based on data collected, and knowledge of the county and the industry.• Assist in developing and/or enhancing/expanding relationships with appropriate agencies, organizations, industries, and community leaders for the program.

Administrative Management - 10%• Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise in the operation of the Horticulture programming, utilizing appropriate policies and procedures and with guidance of supervisor as needed.• Assist in monitoring program to ensure that educational content conforms to policies and objectives of the association and is research based.• Assist with monitoring program financial status to ensure compliance with funding requirements, program budget, grant specifications, and adherence to association strategies/plan of work.• Effectively manage program budget allocations. Assist with identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources within the Association. • Assist in identifying and recommending program needs (i.e., program supplies and materials).• Support and assist with ensuring volunteer direction and management procedures are followed according to established policies and procedures by providing guidance, leadership and resources for volunteers and volunteer leaders including recruitment, screening, orientation, training, evaluation, and management. • Under guidance from Supervisor, provide leadership and supervision of assigned staff by coaching, supporting, and providing feedback to enable achievement of program objectives and meet the needs of constituents.

Administrative Coordination/Operation - 5%• Apply existing subject matter knowledge to coordinate, compile, assemble, and organize program resources and program and teaching materials.• Coordinate identified administrative tasks related to the workforce development program to support the delivery of established educational program goals, i.e., confirming events; gathering materials and resources for program delivery; and ensuring delivery to offsite program locations. • Organize and coordinate activities related to the workforce development program.• Assist with preparation and submitting grants/contracts for new or existing funding.• Maintain records of volunteers, class participants, complete reports, and accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required.• Participate as an active member of the Urban Ag Working Group meetings, initiatives, and yearly conference.• Assist in utilizing effective marketing strategies in the promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, and multi-media efforts.• Maintaining communication with constituents and the community through variety of methods such as contributing educational articles to program newsletters, e-mails, electronic technology, internet, social media, and website postings.• Process, track, and maintain event and program registration and monies as per established policy. • Collect and reconcile event and program receipts and monies. Prepare program expense reports.• Maintain records of class participants, complete reports, and accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required.• Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.• Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures. • Maintain confidentiality of all information and data collected, accessed, and/or maintained.• Provide data and information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as requested.• Transport self, participants, and/or program materials/resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%• In cooperation with the Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.• Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required. • Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.• Carry out assignments and other duties as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to local fairs, community activities, etc. • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned. • Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.

POSITION DETAILS

  • Full-time, non-exempt position, scheduled to work 40 hours per week.

  • Based from the Rochester, NY office.

  • Onsite work required. Not eligible for remote or hybrid scheduling.

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS $24.00 to $24.25 per hour based on knowledge, skills, experience, and abilities.
