University of Rochester Financial Analyst, SMH in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Responsible for generating and analyzing nursing performance measures and presenting outcomes to the executive staff. Creates tools and reports to improve ability to manage department financial and operational activities through use of programming and in depth understanding of financial and operational administration. Able to analyze complex data, understand relationships among sources of information, and make independent assessments. Assists with preparation of operating budgets and performs financial reporting and analysis across all activities for the Nursing department. Generate overall nursing budget presentation with assistance from Director of Finance Nursing Practice and Sr. Financial Analyst. Serve as the lead contact to troubleshoot and resolve agency issues with vendors.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general direction of the Sr. Financial Analyst, conforming to URMC policies but retaining latitude for independent judgment and initiative:

Report Maintenance and Data Analysis:

  1. Interpret and analyze monthly performance metric data and statistics including but not limited to:

  2. Salary expenses such as Orientation, Overtime

  3. Non-salary expenses such as Employee Recognition, Medical Supplies

  4. Staff turnover/attrition

  5. Create, maintain, and troubleshoot monthly reports such as:

  6. Cost per Patient Day, Nursing Scorecards, Patient Day Report, Variance Report, Care Hour Report

  7. Prepare and distribute weekly reports such as:

  8. Traveler FTE and Productive FTE forecasts

  9. Manage NDNQI submission process for nursing indicators such as:

  10. Nursing Care Hours and Patient Days

  11. Assist in the development and maintenance of Flex budget & Productive vacancy reports

  12. Ad hoc analysis and reporting as needed.

  13. Other duties as assigned.

Budget Planning & Fiscal Management:

  1. Assist in preparing Nursing Practice Operating Budget under general direction of Finance Director Nursing Practice and Sr. Financial Analyst.

  2. Generate financial reports and expense projections to support budget processes.

  3. Assist in the preparation of business plans for new nursing units and incremental staffing requests for current units and departmental programs.

  4. Analyze nursing variances for FTEs and salary costs monthly and work with nursing management on action plans.

  5. Assist with the monthly attestation/reconciliation process for Nursing accounts under the guidelines of Nursing Practice audit policy including reporting needs and error follow-up.

  6. Track and analyze agency expense trends and budget variances; prepare monthly accruals.

  7. Prepare and submit monthly journal entries.

Resource Support & Training:

  1. Set up and teach financial workshops to nurse management on monthly fiscal responsibilities (such as variance analysis, transaction reconciliation)

  2. Serve as a resource to nursing departments related to UR Financials tasks and processes

  3. Assist with presentations to nursing leadership and/or executive groups as needed, such as:

  4. Nursing Leadership Orientation, New Nurse Manager Development Program, Assistant Nurse Manager Development Residency

  5. Assist in training Business Administrator I position.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or a related field and 1-2 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a healthcare setting working with clinical faculty and staff preferred.

  2. Expertise in advanced Excel tools and/or database or dashboard management experience, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and keen attention to detail.

  3. Ability to use independent judgment and manage time and priorities effectively.

  4. Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism.

  5. Experience with presentations and staff training preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $60,431 - $84,603 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
