University of Rochester Data Scientist I in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

With general supervision and guidance, participates in the design, implementation and dissemination of advanced analytics and data science projects. The data scientist works with and advises key stakeholders and provides analysis and insights to enable data-driven decision-making. Supports the development and evolution of advanced statistical and mathematical methods, including machine learning capabilities. Works in partnership with team members to solve complex problems, ensure robust, scalable analytics solutions and implement them efficiently and effectively across the enterprise.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Works with senior team members to translate complex data into insights and compelling stories. Presents data models, analyses and visuals (including dynamic visuals such as dashboards) to internal and external stakeholders. Iterates and refines based on feedback.

  2. Works with project director and end-users to understand project requirements. Understands underlying clinical and research requirements and formulates, designs and executes analytical solutions to support them.

  3. Provides scalable solutions and collaborates on dissemination efforts. Creates and implements data science solutions to support analytical efforts and expand dashboard capabilities. Works with senior team members to develop and manage project plans. Executes and evolves project plans.

  4. Develops preliminary analyses and prototypes. In collaboration with senior team members, analyzes and models structured data and implements algorithms to support analysis using advanced statistical and mathematical methods. Develops and implements robust, reproducible processes to prepare, extract and enrich a variety of structured and unstructured data sources.

  5. Writes, tests and deploys queries and/or API connections to internal and external databases. Cleans and manipulates data so that it is in a usable format for others. Designs and builds data marts and data warehouses to support advanced reporting scenarios. Links data from multiple sources and stores it in a format that is easy to query.

  6. Maintains current knowledge base and expertise relative to the technology and software used by related to the functional areas being supported.

  7. Designs and develops prototypes of data models, ML pipelines, dashboards and reporting. Cultivates new data sources to offer insights and analyses needed for research and decision-making.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Math, Information Science or related field required or equivalent combination of education and experience;

  • Master's degree preferred.

  • Considerable experience with relational databases;

  • Strong attention to detail, ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems and strong critical thinking skills;

  • Strong analytic, qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, with demonstrated ability to break down complex problems into phased deliverables;

  • Ability to work independently and successfully complete assigned tasks on time with limited oversight.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including the ability to describe data science concepts to lay/nonexpert audiences;

  • Proficiency with Python (or R), including common machine/deep learning libraries and their implementation;

  • Fluency with data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Spotfire or PowerBI.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $59,197 - $82,888 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
