Summary The incumbent will serve in this developmental assignment until the full performance level of Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, target GS-08, is reached. Performs the full spectrum of radiographic and fluoroscopic examinations. Receives patients, explains method of procedure, and obtains signed consents for examinations with contrast media. The incumbent is responsible for proper positioning of patients. Prior to exposure selects and sets technical factors. Responsibilities Duties Include but are not limited to: Performs procedures such as fluoroscopy, gastrointestinal examinations, conventional plain film radiography, myelography, fluoroscopic guided, interventional procedures, portable radiography, digital radiography, and operating room radiography Supports clinicians in the performance of exams, anticipates imaging, and equipment needs before and during the procedure, follows the progress of the procedure and facilitates an efficient flow. Performs examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for routine physical examinations and for diagnosis of illness or of injuries of accident victims. Properly labels, secures, prepares, and administers radiographic contrast material orally, intravenously, or by enema under the supervision of a physician. Monitors patients during and after contrast administration for adverse reactions. Properly labels all medications on and of the sterile field during procedures. Performs radiographic procedures using the proper exposure techniques, including manual and photo timed exposures. These exams are performed using exposure tables, digital cassettes, buckies, collimators, grids, and other technical aids to produce radiographs of diagnostic quality with the minimum of retakes. Monitors the examination by checking the computation, performance, and results of the selected parameters to obtain the best diagnostic computer-generated data and images. Monitors the patients physical condition, physiologic changes during the procedure and keeps the clinician informed. Reviews requests for appropriateness before performing exams. Incumbent uses appropriateness criteria, the clinical history-provided on the request, interviews the patient, reviews the patient chart, or contacts the ordering clinician as needed for clarification. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Physical Requirements. English Language Proficiency Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, completion of 1 year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled which demonstrates knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics that are directly related to the specific assignment. For GS-06/7/8, completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level and directly related to the position being filed. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-05 to GS-08. Physical Requirements: The physical demand of the work includes Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability.
