Universal Engineering Sciences Construction Materials Testing Department Manager in Richmond, Virginia
Your role as the CMT Department Manager will both utilize and expand your talents to provide project management and oversight of CMT projects as well as supervision of the CMT department. In addition to your daily responsibilities, you will have the opportunity to create lasting relationships with our diverse team and directly contribute to our path to becoming the most sought after, respected, and successful engineering firm in the country.
Responsibilities
Travel to various job sites in a company provided vehicle as needed
Manage the full lifecycle of field services engineering projects and laboratory operations
Lead a team of CMT engineers, project managers, and technicians
Ensure projects adhere to CMT engineering best practices, safety standards, and quality control procedures
Perform technical review of proposals, reports, and calculations
Track department budget, revenue, forecasts, and financial performance
Set goals for the CMT/Field Services group and develop staff skills through training initiatives
Assist senior staff with business development efforts through community involvement and client engagement
Attend project meetings and troubleshoot problems in the field
Promote company values, positive culture, and high employee engagement
Review daily field reports from a technical oversight
Approve weekly timesheets and department expense reports
Prepare invoices
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred: 4-year degree from an accredited university with a focus in Civil Engineering or relevant field of study
Preferred: Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Virginia or ability to obtain licensure within three months of hire
6+ years of related engineering experience, including conducting laboratory testing, construction observation, field quality assurance testing, site grading, and supervising construction materials testing.
Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
Strong technical knowledge of testing procedures and specifications.
Experience with budgets, forecasts, and financial management.
Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
Knowledge of construction materials methods, ASTM standards and soil classifications
Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
Operational and project management experience
Experience in overseeing materials testing projects
Ability to evaluate “Request for Proposals,” attend site meetings or converse with potential clients to develop a scope of services and associated cost estimate
Understand company goals and objectives and execute accordingly
Understanding of human resource management principles, practices and procedures
Strong leadership skills; strong and proven work ethic
Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to analyze and correct operational issues
Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language
Highly self-motivated, self-directed and attentive to detail
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at a time

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments.
Office work requiring long-term sitting and computer work.
Some weekend and overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required. You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day.
Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit).
Ability to occasionally lift and/or move/shake up to 40lbs (soil and/or concrete tests and related apparatus); frequently lift and/or move up to 60lbs (soil and sand samples, and nuclear density equipment); and occasionally move more than 100lbs. (such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete samples).
