Job Summary and Qualifications

The Assistant Director of Pharmacy assists the Director of Pharmacy in establishing, implementing, and maintaining compliance with policies and procedures to meet regulatory and organizational requirements and standards of practice. This position maintains direct responsibility for staff pharmacists and conducts their annual performance evaluations. The Assistant Director serves as a liaison to other departments and assists as otherwise requested by the Director of Pharmacy. The Assistant Director provides managerial support to the Director of Pharmacy and other Pharmacy Department Leadership through day-to-day departmental leadership and coordination of pharmacy workflow.

· Manages and supervises Pharmacy operations including responsibility for formulating and implementing institutional policy and practice at the department level, and overseeing day to day operations and workflow of the pharmacy department

· Assists in the planning, development, organization, operation, and evaluation of pharmacy services. Assesses and changes pharmacy operations in coordination with the pharmacy management team.

· Assists in maintaining appropriate information systems to optimize pharmacy workflow.

· Assures pharmacy staff development, new employee orientation, and ongoing training in the pharmacy in coordination with other pharmacy managers.

· Helps assure that policies and procedures are updated and followed in coordination with the pharmacy management team.

· Assures compliance with pharmacy laws and provides staff guidance when appropriate in regards to regulatory agencies including The Joint Commission standards, National Patient Safety Goals, and USP 797, and participates in quality assurance activities to evaluate and maintain safe medication practices.

What qualifications you will need:

· B.S. or PharmD Degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy.

· Eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the State of Virginia.

· Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a hospital pharmacist.

· ASHP accredited residency or advanced degree (MBA, MHA, MS) preferred.

· Ability to work independently and manage others as demonstrated by the following:

a. Organization – ability to work independently and proactively prioritize needs & effectively manage department resources

b. Communication – strong verbal and written communication skills;

c. Leadership – sets high performance standards and provides guidance for individuals and groups to achieve desired outcomes, and delivering quality pharmacy services;

d. Customer Orientation – works to establish and maintain long-term customer relationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations both within and outside of the department;

e. Policies and Procedures – an ability to articulate knowledge of and understanding for organizational policies, procedures and systems;

f. PC Skills - proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications and other required operating systems such as CPOE, Order Scanning Systems, Automated Dispensing g. Units, Packaging Equipment, etc.;

g. Financial management – application of tools and processes to successfully help manage departmental budget;

h. Project management - assesses employee work activities and allocates resources appropriately;

QUALIFICATIONS

· Required - Hospital Pharmacy Management Experience (1-2 years minimum) at a senior management level position.

· Required - License in good standing as a Pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

· Preferred - Hospital Pharmacy Management Experience (3-5+ years) at an Asst. Director or Director level position.

EDUCATION

· Required – Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, or Doctor of Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy.

· Preferred – Advanced degree in pharmacy management or administration.
