PREREQUISITES: RN with appropriate licensure, EKG interpretation skills, Cath Lab experience or Telemetry ICU experience, current CPR certification, excellent communication skills (both oral and written), knowledge of medical office operations.

PURPOSE: To act as an extension of SSM SLUCare Cardiology physicians during and between scheduled office visits. Provides timely, accurate information on the functioning capabilities of implanted devices.

ACCOUNTABILITIES: Planning, implementation and evaluation of implanted device capabilities and support services to SSM SLUCare Cardiology physicians. Serve as a resource for patient education, as well as device subject matter expert for other SSM associates.

DUTIES:

  • Perform stoke surveillance (loop records) clinic.

  • Assist in bringing on board and then doing heart failure device clinic.

  • Perform wound checks on new and replaced devices.

  • Performs routine device interrogations, thresholds, sensing and reprogramming according to industry standards. Communicate findings with physicians.

  • Professionally communicates to the appropriate SSM physician any and all device abnormalities found during pacemaker/ILR/ICD/CRT evaluations that are outside established parameters or those that potentially have a negative impact on the health of the patient. This includes home monitoring downloads.

  • Provides accurate and concise documentation on all device evaluations and encounters with patients per SSM policies and device manufacturers’ requirements.

  • Under physician supervision, will coordinate device follow up of recalled/alerted devices.

  • Provide SSM patients with device education and teaching as well as psychological support to patients and families.

  • Serve as device education resource person for other SSM nurses and associates.

  • Assist with collection of data for quality control/research studies following established protocols.

  • Stay current on billing/coding and how codes are applicable to device specific encounters

  • Stay updated on CRDM technical advances for all manufacturers.

TOOLS: EPIC, PC, device company programmers, device company websites, device company/rep technical support via phone, home monitoring equipment, calipers, rate ruler, telephone, email, fax and copier.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implements and monitors patient care plans. Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate.

  • Serves as a primary coordinator of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care.

  • Notes and carries out physician and nursing orders.

  • Assesses and coordinates patient's discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team.

  • Applies the existing body of evidence-based practice and scientific knowledge in health care to nursing practice, ensuring that nursing care is delivered based on patient’s age-specific needs and clinical needs as described in the department's Scope of Service.

  • As an SSM Health nurse, I will demonstrate the professional nursing standards defined in the professional practice model. Uses the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide his/her response to the current and evolving health and nursing needs of our patients and our patient populations.

  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing

EXPERIENCE

  • Two years' clinical registered nurse experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Constant use of speech to share information through oral communication.

  • Constant standing and walking.

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.

  • Frequent sitting, reaching and keyboard use/data entry.

  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.

  • Frequent use of smell to detect/recognize odors.

  • Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.

  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.

  • Occasional lifting/moving of patients.

  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.

  • Occasional driving.

  • Rare crawling and running.
