Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) manages one of the most challenging radioactive waste cleanup projects in the country. Our focus is reducing the environmental risk posed by 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste stored in 177 underground tanks on the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. WRPS seeks four (4) Environmental Specialists who will provide environmental support for the following:

  • Operations of the Low-Activity Waste Pretreatment System

  • Effluent Treatment Facility, 4 surface impoundments at the Liquid Effluent Retention Facility, 200 Area Treated Effluent Disposal Facility, and the State-Approved Land Disposal Site

  • Tank Farm Projects activities, including upgrades to operating facilities, waste tank integrity evaluations, installation of new structures and/or modification of existing ones, installation/removal of waste tank equipment, and construction of interim surface barriers in select tank farms.

  • Retrieval/transfer of waste from non-compliant single-shell tanks to double-shell tanks. May also provide support to Tank Farm Projects, Closure & Interim Measures, and Maintenance/Facilities providing input to internal WRPS environmental reporting requirements. The position will also provide environmental support to all TOC facilities as required.

Responsibilities of the Environmental Specialist include, but are not limited to following activities:

Provide day-to-day environmental support to ensure compliance with environmental policies, requirements, and procedures.

Provide environmental input in work planning and high-risk work reviews.

Review and approve technical documents such as work packages, procedures, control plans, site evaluations, and excavation permits.

Oversee field activities, such as facility modification and upgrades, to ensure implementation that is compliant with current permits and other regulatory requirements. This may require the donning of personal protective equipment appropriate for the hazards (e.g., respiratory equipment).

Support the preparation of environmental permits or permit modifications.

Perform surveillances and compliance inspections to provide organizational feedback on environmental performance.

Prepare records/documentation for regulatory inspections or document requests

Ensure environmental data is collected and analyzed to demonstrate compliance with various RCRA , radioactive air, toxic air permits and other regulatory requirements.

Provide Environmental on-call support and issue regulatory notifications, as required.

Maintain all required certifications and qualifications.

Assist in developing tools and processes to verify compliance of requirements.

Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by management commensurate with training and qualifications

Required Qualifications

Grade 16:

BA/BS in Environmental Science, Engineering or related discipline and two to four (2-4) years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Grade 17:

BA/BS in Environmental Science, Engineering or related discipline and a minimum of five (5) years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level; however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of radioactive and mixed waste practices and regulations, (e.g., Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, etc.)

Experience interacting with environmental regulatory agencies

Experience in providing Environmental compliance support

Strong communication skills. Must be able to communicate with multiple disciplines (Operations, Project Management, Construction, Engineering, etc.), peers, and management

Radiological Worker II training

EPA Method 9 visible emission certification of experience

Compensation & Benefits

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.

Hiring Range Minimum: $86,138

Hiring Range Maximum: $119,250
